| As for motherhood penalty and women’s career development,previous studies mostly focused on the impact and mechanism of motherhood penalty on women’s career development,ignoring women’s efforts to take actions to weaken the negative impact of motherhood penalty under the constraints of structure.This paper studies how women in the Internet industry take strategic actions to mitigate the negative effects of motherhood penalty and promote their career development under the background of motherhood penalty.Through the analysis of the collected interview data,it is found that women in the Internet industry adopt the following four career self-help strategies after weighing the workplace and family situation: stick to the original post,transfer to another post,change industries,and wait for the post.No matter what kind of career self-help strategy is adopted,women in the Internet industry will carry out a series of career self-help actions based on their own resources.In the further analysis of women’s career self-help action,this paper finds that Internet women’s career self-help action has its special features.The struggle of middle and lower level women to maintain their employment rights is mostly about the struggle of survival ethics,while the struggle of Internet women is the struggle of the gender minority groups to the unreasonable gender division of labor in the white-collar workplace,more from the awakening of the equality of gender division of labor.In the process of self-help,women in this industry constantly construct their own gender consciousness and reflexively use social gender norms to help self-help.In the male-dominated work environment,women constantly adjust their identities between female employees and non-gender employees through "de-gendered",so as to gain the recognition of female "employees" from leaders and colleagues.At the same time,in the family area,women actively negotiate the division of unpaid labor in the home so that they can participate in paid labor in the external labor market on an equal basis with men.When negotiating the unpaid division of labor in the family,women make use of the temperament characteristics imposed on them by traditional social gender norms,such as softness,sensibility and irrationality,to carry out demonstration or performance protests.The essence of women’s strategic career self-help action in the Internet industry is their daily struggle against the unequal gender division of labor.In view of the fertility punishment of women in Internet industry under the effect of structure,this paper considers the way of professional self-help from the aspects of ideological change,institutional support and female self-reliance.The analysis of women’s career self-help in the Internet industry will help to improve the traditional image of women as weak and passive. |
