The physical condition and mental health of middle school students have always been a hot topic of social concern.Football is characterized by strong antagonism, changeability and heavy exercise load.Participating in football is beneficial to the development of students’ physical quality and mental health. This paper aims to provide theoretical support for the promotion of campus football by studying the influence of 16-week football teaching intervention on the physical quality and mental health of freshmen. In this study, the methods of literature review, experiment, questionnaire and mathematical statistics were used.Students from two classes of Grade One in Fuyang No.1 Middle School were selected as subjects, and each class(25 boys and 28 girls)was selected as subjects. The experimental group was taught football in physical education class twice a week, while the control group was taught football in physical education class twice a week according to the contents of the school syllabus. Before the football teaching intervention, the students of the two groups were tested for their body shape index(height, weight, body mass index BMI),physical function index(vital capacity)and physical fitness index(50-meter running, standing long jump,800/1000-meter running,pull-ups,one-minute sit-ups,30-meter running around the pole, and sitting forward),and were tested with SCL-90.After 16 weeks of football teaching intervention, the two groups of students were tested for the above indicators again, and the test data before and after the experiment were compared and analyzed with SPSS software.Research results:(1)Body shape: After 16 weeks of football teaching intervention, the height of the experimental group and the control group increased significantly(P < 0.05),but there was no significant difference in weight and BMI(P > 0.05);After the experiment, there was no significant difference in height, weight and body mass index BMI between the experimental group and the control group(P > 0.05).(2)Physical function: After 16 weeks of football teaching intervention, the students’ vital capacity in the experimental group increased significantly(P < 0.01),while the students’ vital capacity in the control group did not increase significantly(P > 0.05).After the experiment, there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group(P < 0.01),and there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group(P < 0.05).(3)Physical fitness: After 16 weeks of football teaching intervention, there were significant differences between boys and girls in the experimental group in 50-meter running, standing long jump,1000-meter running,30-meter running and lung capacity growth(P < 0.01).Compared with the control boys, there was a significant increase in50-meter running and sitting forward(P < 0.05),and there was a significant difference in the growth of standing long jump and pull-ups(P < 0.01).After the experiment, there were significant differences in the test data of 50-meter running,1000-meter running, standing long jump and 30-meter running around the pole between the experimental group and the control group(P < 0.05).Compared with the girls in the control group, there are significant differences in the test data of 800-meter running, standing long jump and sitting forward(P < 0.05),and there are extremely significant differences in the test data of 50-meter running(P < 0.01).(4)Mental health: After 16 weeks of football teaching intervention, the students in the experimental group were significantly reduced in nine dimensions(P < 0.01);In the control group, students’ somatization, interpersonal sensitivity and psychosis were significantly reduced(P < 0.05),while obsessive-compulsive symptoms, anxiety and depression were significantly reduced(P < 0.01).After the experiment, there were significant differences in somatization, anxiety and terror between the experimental group and the control group(P < 0.05),and there were significant differences in obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity and depression(P < 0.01).Conclusion:(1)The football teaching intervention has a certain positive effect on the body shape of senior high school students, but it is not significant compared with the regular physical education class.(2)Football teaching intervention has a significant effect on the growth of senior high school students’ vital capacity, especially among boys, indicating that football teaching intervention is superior to conventional teaching in promoting senior high school students’ physical function.(3)Football teaching intervention can effectively improve the test scores of senior high school students in speed quality(50 meters running),endurance quality(800/1000 meters running),explosive force of lower limbs(standing long jump)and agility quality(30 meters running around the pole).(4)The intervention in football teaching has obviously improved the mental health level of senior high school students, especially in the dimensions of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity and depression.
