In today’s language teaching, cultivating students’ core literacy skills is a key requirement of the new curriculum reform. From the perspective of exercising thinking, cultivating aesthetics and nourishing the mind,whole-book reading has its unique functions.By introducing the theory of "master themes" derived from literary criticism into whole-book reading, exploratory reading around "master themes" can promote concentration and differentiation, openness and coherence of thinking, and at the same time can better enhance students’ reading thinking. From this perspective, research on whole-book reading teaching from the perspective of literary master themes has certain theoretical and practical values. If front-line teachers can apply the "master theme" in their teaching,it will be beneficial to secondary school students’ reading of whole books, and it will also promote students’ literacy skills and personal development. Therefore,it is an effective construction based on the theoretical arrangement to teach middle school students whole book reading from the perspective of literary themes. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. It introduces the reason for choosing the topic, gives an overview of the current situation of this paper’s research, and explains the research ideas. The second part is the definition of the concept of text. The basic concepts such as "whole book" and "master theme" are clarified, and a theoretical discussion on the application of literary master themes to the teaching of whole book reading is conducted to affirm the positive effect of literary master themes in teaching practice. The third part is the practical significance of teaching whole book reading from the perspective of literary motifs, analyzing its necessity and significance from two aspects:the current situation of reading masterpieces and students’ language literacy. The fourth part is the strategy of whole book reading from the perspective of literary masters. The author divides the whole book reading into four stages, each of which proposes corresponding reading strategies for students, texts, and the characteristics of the "master theme" to help students understand the text better, faster, and deeper. The fifth part is the instructional design using Water Margin as an example. The instructional design is a complete and systematic project, which includes the teaching objectives, the learning process and the arrangement of the learning contents, the specific learning steps and the methods to test the effectiveness,so that students can learn deeply.
