A Study On The Problem Setting Of Australian History Textbooks

The problem setting in textbooks is an important content of textbooks and an important tool for students to learn.As a pioneer in "core literacy" education,Australia’s textbook issues reflect the value appeal of Australian history education to talent cultivation.The study of textbook problem setting in Australia is conducive to providing guidance and inspiration for the compilation of textbooks in China,the design of various problem links,and how to implement the curriculum requirements through the problem setting in textbooks.This article selects the seventh grade history textbooks published by Pearson,Jacaranda,and Cambridge,which are widely used in Australian secondary schools,as the research objects,and explores their problem settings from three chapters.In the first chapter,this article analyzes the requirements of the Australian National Curriculum Standards for the writing of history textbooks.From a macro perspective,textbook writing and problem setting should reflect the seven comprehensive abilities.Combined with the seventh grade history curriculum,from a specific perspective,textbooks should not only cover the basic knowledge of ancient world history,that is,early human civilization and late ancient society,but also reflect the training of students’ historical skills.On the basis of a deep analysis of the curriculum standards,this article refines the requirements of the Australian National History Curriculum Standards for the problem setting of history textbooks into: "developing historical thinking","consolidating comprehensive abilities","expanding international perspectives",and "cultivating social awareness".In chapter 2 to 4,this article has carried out a detailed analysis of the problem links in the Pearson,Jacaranda,and Cambridge editions of seventh grade history textbooks.It has analyzed the distribution,question types,functions,and how to implement the curriculum requirements of each problem link,and summarized their respective characteristics.The Pearson edition focuses on the exploration of historical details,while the Jacaranda edition emphasizes the guidance of thinking,while the Cambridge edition emphasizes the training of basic knowledge and skills.In Chapter 5,combining specific examples,this article summarizes the overall advantages of problem setting in Australian history textbooks embodied in the three versions of textbooks,pointing out that they possess four major characteristics: "clear hierarchy,deep thinking," "immersing oneself in history,creating situations,""pursuing identity,cultivating citizens," and "extending from ancient times to modern times,looking at the world." At the same time,it also points out that they have too many questions,causing students’ academic burden,"Teachers’ job burnout and the fact that the compilation of textbooks is still under the" Western centered "discourse system are still flaws.
