Abstract/Summary:
Counterfactual thinking is a kind of cognitive activity in which an individual conceptualizes the events that have occurred and constructs other possible results psychologically.Counterfactual thinking is a common phenomenon in daily life.Because this psychological simulation provides another possibility,it will have an impact on the individual’s mood, behavior and mental health.Previous studies have explored the influencing factors of counterfactual thinking, but few have explored the role of family factors on counterfactual thinking from the perspective of ecosystem.Since parents are important others in individual socialization, the parenting styles adopted by parents will play a profound and lasting role in individual cognition and mental health. It is very necessary to explore the relationship between parenting style and counterfactual thinking. This helps to reveal the mechanism of counterfactual thinking. Therefore,on the basis of literature review, this study introduces parenting styles as the independent variable, trying to explore the relationship between parenting styles and counterfactual thinking,as well as the internal influence mechanism between self-acceptance and emotional resilience. This study uses the valid data of 537 college students to measure college students by using the Short Parenting Style Inventory, the self administered Counterfactual Thinking Questionnaire for College Students, the Self Acceptance Questionnaire, and the Youth Emotional Resilience Questionnaire. The results show that:1.College students’ parental emotional warmth is in the upper middle level, parental refusal and parental over-protection are in the lower middle level, counterfactual thinking is in the middle level,self-acceptance and emotional resilience are in the upper middle level.2.In terms of demographic variables, parental emotional warmth and counterfactual thinking have significant differences in gender;Parental emotional warmth and self-acceptance have significant differences in family location.3.The dimension of emotional warmth in college students’ parenting styles is correlated with self-acceptance,emotional resilience and counterfactual thinking, while the dimension of parental rejection, parental over-protection and counterfactual thinking are not significantly correlated.Parental emotional warmth can predict counterfactual thinking, parental emotional warmth can positively predict self-acceptance,and self-acceptance can predict counterfactual thinking.4.College students’ self-acceptance plays a completely mediating role in the influence of parental emotional warmth on counterfactual thinking, and the complete mediating effect is significant, which is embodied in that parental emotional warmth positively affects the level of self-acceptance,and then affects college students’ counterfactual thinking.5.College students’ emotional resilience plays a regulatory role in the influence of self-acceptance on counterfactual thinking.Specifically, emotional resilience negatively regulates the impact of self-acceptance on counterfactual thinking, that is,compared with college students with high emotional resilience,self-acceptance has a more significant impact on counterfactual thinking of college students with low emotional resilience.6.The moderated intermediary model with parental emotional warmth as the independent role, counterfactual thinking as the dependent role,self-acceptance as the mediating role, and emotional resilience as the moderating role is established. The above results show that the emotional warmth of college students’ parents affects individual counterfactual thinking by influencing the level of self-acceptance,and the emotional resilience of college students plays a moderating role in the influence of self-acceptance on counterfactual thinking.Based on the above conclusions, this study points out that individuals can be guided to produce appropriate counterfactual thinking by improving parenting styles, intervening in self-acceptance and emotional resilience.
