Since the outbreak of the COVID-19,according to the requirements of epidemic prevention policies of various countries,China has postponed sending Chinese teachers and volunteers abroad, and the development of offline Chinese teaching abroad has almost stalled. In order to extricate the cause of TCSL from difficulties, online Chinese language teaching has been promoted as a new teaching mode in various Confucius Institutes and Chinese teaching institutions.Although online Chinese language teaching is safe and convenient enough, and teachers can use more Internet teaching tools and methods, there are also many problems in various aspects: problems with the curriculum itself and the online teaching platform; The management of teaching institutions, the problems of teachers, and the problems of students themselves.According to D(?)rnyei’s three-level theory of motivation, specific problems at different levels in the process of online Chinese teaching can become factors that affect learners’ motivation for second language learning. Therefore,it is important to explore these influencing factors, compare the differences, and provide solutions to the problem. This article takes Elyon Christian middle school students in Surabaya,Indonesia,as the main research object, and uses a qualitative and quantitative research method to explore the overall situation, influencing factors, and the relationship between the influencing factors and individual differences in online Chinese learning motivation among the middle school students in Surabaya,Indonesia. After obtaining research data through questionnaires and interviews, suggestions are proposed to address the attenuation of learners’ motivation for online Chinese learning at the levels of learners, teachers, and schools. The full text is divided into six parts. The first chapter is an introduction, including the source and significance of the topic, research issues and values, research methods, and research overview. The research review identifies D(?)rnyei’s three-level theory of motivation as the theoretical basis for this article, mainly summarizing the theoretical achievements of recent studies on motivation for Chinese second language learning, motivation attenuation for second language learning, online Chinese learning, and other related studies. The second chapter is the teaching overview of Elyon Christian school, mainly introducing the Chinese language learning situation of the students of the Elyon Christian school,as well as the teaching materials and online Chinese language curriculum arrangement. The third chapter is research design and implementation, which explains the formulation of questionnaires and interview outlines,as well as the implementation of both. The fourth chapter is the analysis of questionnaire data and interview results, which is the main research part of this article.A total of 107 valid questionnaires were collected from this questionnaire survey,of which 77 believed that they had experienced a decline in motivation in online Chinese learning, and described the decline in motivation among various groups.Through descriptive analysis,it was found that the impact of various dimensions leading to the attenuation of learners’ motivation for online Chinese learning was different: platform and environment dimensions>learner dimensions>teacher teaching dimensions.Through independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA,it was found that the impact of sub factors under each dimension on different learners is different: male learners are more susceptible to the impact of teacher attitudes, seventh grade learners are more susceptible to the impact of teaching platforms and equipment, and learners who have studied Chinese for more than 6 years are more susceptible to the impact of teacher teaching abilities.Through analyzing the interview results,we found that the decline of learners’ motivation is very common, and the reasons are also very complex.Teachers and schools have also found a decline in learner motivation in their teaching and have been actively trying to address it.Chapter 5 is a discussion and suggestion, which discusses the research results and proposes suggestions to alleviate the attenuation of learners’ motivation in online Chinese learning: learners should cultivate self-discipline and good mentality in online learning, establish specific learning objectives for online Chinese learning, and increase the frequency of Chinese language use;Teachers should cultivate the ability of information based teaching, fully prepare for teaching, and attach importance to traditional teaching elements in the classroom;Schools should increase psychological intervention for learners, focus on developing offline Chinese interest activities, and optimize students’ online Chinese learning experience.Chapter 6 is the conclusion, which provides a comprehensive review of the full text and summarizes the conclusions of the study, pointing out the shortcomings of the article and the prospects for future online Chinese teaching. |
