Helicopter parenting is a part of the family parenting style,which refers to parents’ excessive involvement and application of inappropriate developmental strategies to their children’s lives.This study explores the relationship between helicopter parenting and life satisfaction by introducing two variables,basic psychological needs,and self-control,to investigate the mediating role of basic psychological needs and self-control between them,and use group counseling to improve junior high school school students’ life satisfaction.Study 1 used the questionnaire survey method to study the relationship between the parental helicopter parenting,basic psychological needs,self-control and life satisfaction of junior high school students,using the helicopter parenting scale,basic psychological needs scale,self-control scale and adolescent student life satisfaction scale.The questionnaire was used to test 788 junior high school students in Fujian Province,and the results were as follows:(1)Junior high school students’ parental helicopter parenting,basic psychological needs and self-control were all at an intermediate level,and life satisfaction was at an intermediate to low level.There were no differences in any of the demographic variables for father’s helicopter parenting,differences in mother’s helicopter parenting by grade level,differences in basic psychological needs by gender and mother’s education level,differences in self-control by gender,and differences in life satisfaction by gender and parent’s education level There were differences in both sexes.(2)There were significant negative correlations between parental helicopter parenting and basic psychological needs,self-control and life satisfaction among junior high school students.(3)Junior high school students’ basic psychological needs and self-control acted as a chain mediator between parental helicopter parenting and life satisfaction.Study 2 used a 2(experimental group,control group)×3(pre-test,post-test,follow-up test)mixed design experimental approach.Forty junior high school students in Fuzhou,Fujian Province were used as the study participants,and the experimental group was given a 6-week intervention in the form of group counselling,while the control group was given no intervention.The following conclusions were drawn: group counselling was effective in enhancing the basic psychological needs,self-control and life satisfaction of junior high school studentsIt is recommended that parents adopt a moderate approach in parenting to improve their life satisfaction by meeting their children’s basic psychological needs and developing self-control.
