With the popularization and application of new technologies in classrooms and experimental environments, the prospects for science and mathematics education are constantly changing. The development of innovative teaching models has prompted mathematics education to combine traditional textbook education with exploratory practical learning. One of the most revolutionary new tools that has emerged in this rapid transformation is virtual reality technology.More and more educators are actively exploring and committed to applying desktop based virtual reality platforms to the field of education, especially in exploratory teaching models. The application of virtual reality can stimulate students’ awareness of active thinking and independent exploration to a greater extent, and improve teaching efficiency. At the same time, with the continuous promotion of curriculum reform, promoting students’ transformation of mathematical knowledge into mathematical literacy is an important direction of mathematics subject education.Whether it is mathematics learning or research, abstract thinking, reasoning thinking, and model thinking are inseparable, and these thinking cannot be separated from a person’s mathematical ability. What is the sense of numbers and how to cultivate the sense of numbers in primary school students have become the focus of educational researchers. In summary,in order to improve the relevant theories and practices of exploratory teaching mode, this study proposes to apply desktop virtual reality technology to primary school mathematics teaching and construct an exploratory teaching mode based on desktop virtual reality. In this study,we first compare the research status of digital sensing, virtual reality, and exploratory teaching models both domestically and internationally,in order to propose research questions and determine relevant concepts and theoretical frameworks;Secondly, based on the classic exploratory teaching model,a desktop virtual reality based exploratory teaching model is established. This model has five learning and implementation stages,namely:(1)scenario introduction;(2)inspiration and thinking;(3)independent exploration;collaborative communication;(5)summary and evaluation; Finally, based on this teaching model, teaching design was carried out and quasi experimental research was conducted to verify the impact of desktop virtual reality based exploratory teaching on the development of elementary school students’ sense of numbers. The measurement tools mainly include elementary school students’ sense of numbers test questions, mathematical concept survey questionnaires, interview record sheets, and student exploration task sheets. This study selected two parallel classes in the third grade of a primary school in Heze City as the research subjects. The first class was an experimental class, using exploratory teaching based on desktop virtual reality, while the second class was a control class, using traditional exploratory teaching.Conduct pre and post experimental tests on two classes before and after teaching to understand the changes in students’ sense of numbers and mathematical concepts before and after the experiment. The research results indicate that exploratory teaching based on desktop virtual reality can promote the development of students’ sense of numbers. At the same time, research has found that exploratory teaching based on desktop virtual reality can improve students’ mathematical concepts, which has a positive effect on their mathematical development.
