Since entering the 21 st century, the International Olympic Committee has formulated and implemented the "Olympic slimming" plan and "Olympic reform" measures, which have had a profound impact on the structure of the Summer Olympics and the development of competitive sports events in various countries around the world.Accurately understanding the changing characteristics, driving factors, and development trends of the Summer Olympics event settings is of great significance for China to prepare for the Olympics in advance and promote the "high-quality development" of competitive sports in China. This study mainly uses the methods of literature review, comparative analysis, historical analysis, logical analysis, and expert interviews to analyze the specific changes, driving factors, and future development trends of the event settings of the 21 st century Summer Olympics. It also considers the current development status of competitive events in China. The specific research conclusions are as follows:1.From the perspective of scale and content, the 21 st century Summer Olympics took the2016 Rio Olympics as the turning point. Before 2016,there were no significant changes in the scale and content of project settings. However, after 2016,the scale has increased and the content has been relatively adjusted; The characteristics of gender change show that the proportion of men and women tends to be balanced; The characteristics of project categories are characterized by a slight decrease in the proportion of heavy competitive and individual projects; The new projects focus on young people and have a close relationship with the host country, with fewer removed projects and mostly internal adjustments.2.The project settings of the modern Summer Olympics are deeply influenced by internal direct factors and external indirect factors.Among them, the internal direct factors include the demand for sustainable development of the Olympics itself, the inherent attributes of the project itself, and the degree of international development;External indirect factors include the stimulation of economic benefits, the radiation of political games, the promotion of cultural integration, and the impact of social development.3.The overall trend of the future Summer Olympics project design will focus on sustainable development, internationalization of projects, and highlighting core values.Specifically, the project setting will show a trend of "seeking stability and change in the overall structure of the project, with a balance between male and female project settings;slight changes in individual and collective projects, with young and fashionable projects receiving attention;a decrease in the proportion of heavy competitive projects, while athletics and water sports remain stable".4.Considering the changes and future development trends in the event settings of previous Summer Olympics in the 21 st century, and considering the current development status of competitive events in China,Accurately grasp the new trend of Olympic project reform, plan the layout in advance;actively assist in the internationalization of China’s advantageous projects, build a long-term mechanism;deeply promote the balanced development of China’s project structure to cope with a new situation;increase efforts to promote China’s characteristic projects into the Olympics, and promote Chinese culture.
