| English abstract,as an important component of masters’ dissertations,is both an indispensable bridge for masters to communicate with international scholars and an vital reflection of students’ English literacy.With the increasing number of China’s master’s dissertations included by foreign journals and databases,the role of English abstracts in international academic exchanges has been highly highlighted by scholars in China.In addition,the broad international vision and professional ability has been an important goal of talent training in colleges and universities with the continuous promotion of internationalization of higher education.Therefore,improving the quality of English abstracts of masters’ dissertations is becoming a necessary for them to communicate with the global and also an indispensable measure to optimize the masters training mechanism.Using the research methods of literature,logical analysis,content analysis,expert interview and questionnaire,we analyzed the English abstracts of the master’s thesis of Theory of Sports Pedagogy and Training(TSPT)of Wuhan Sports University(WSU),and examined the current problems of C-E translation in those abstracts,and we gave in-depth consideration to the inducements to those problems through the questionnaire and field survey,putting forward some solutions to improve the quality of English abstracts of master’s dissertations and desire to improve the training level of the master’s English literacy on the whole.The conclusions are as follows:1.There are obvious grammatical problems in the C-E translation of the abstract of the master’s thesis of TSPT of WSU in terms of three levels of text,syntax and vocabulary.2.On the textual level,the problems are abnormal expression caused by Chinese mode of thinking,incoherence due to loose logical construction,less concise words and language caused by too much redundant information,etc.3.On the syntactic level,the problems are the incomplete sentence structure because of the missing elements,unsystematic sentences caused by abnormal word order,not standardized contents due to the basic grammatical errors,and excessive complex sentence structure due to improper elements,etc.4.On the lexical level,the problems are repeated translation of Chinese words,inaccurate and distorted information caused by inappropriate and wrong words and terms selected,etc.5.There are many factors that affect the quality of the English abstract of the master’s thesis,and among those the most important reasons are closely connected with students themselves,such as the low level of English literacy,lacking of translation strategies and weak awareness of the quality of English abstract.6.Besides,some other factors affecting the quality of English abstracts are the lack of training of English ability and of scientific standard reference for C-E abstracts translation.As an important reflection of the English literacy of the sports masters,the writing and translating quality of English abstracts of sports masters’ dissertations has always been ignored by the colleges and universities,besides English ability is closely related to their professional development.Therefore,the colleges and universities should start with the quality of writing and translating of English abstracts of graduate students,and then comprehensively improve the training level of English literacy of students.Thus students’ improvement in their English literacy could promote their professional development,and then a virtuous circle will be formed that students’ professional development and English literacy will mutual promotes each other.And finally the training quality of sports masters will be improved on the whole. |
