With the continuous development of medical technology, cancer has been transformed from a terminal disease in the traditional sense to a chronic disease with long-term treatment.Although the life span of cancer patients is continuously extended, the side effects of chemotherapy still cause serious physical and psychological pain to patients. In recent years, the new medical model of "physical-psychological-social" has increased the attention to the psychological and social factors of patients, and many individual cancer patients and their families have been able to benefit from the positive Many cancer patients and their families are able to gain support and build a sense of hope through the process of adaptation and adjustment.A sense of hope not only supports cancer patients to transcend their suffering, but also helps them to improve their quality of life and better pursue the meaning of their lives. The current research on hope in China lacks a discussion on the meaning of hope, and there is also a lack of research on hope in the field of social work. Therefore, this study discusses cancer patients with a sense of hope and investigates the specific connotation and influencing factors of the sense of hope in order to provide reference suggestions for medical social workers to improve the level of hope of cancer patients. In this paper,we used a qualitative research method to explore the specific components of cancer patients’ sense of hope and analyze the influencing factors through semi-structured interviews with a total of 13 cancer patients in the oncology department of Hospital S,and thus propose support strategies to enhance the level of hope. The components of cancer patients’ sense of hope were analyzed in three dimensions: reality acceptance, experience sublimation, and action motivation.Reality acceptance specifically includes acceptance of self and acceptance of pain;experience sublimation includes giving meaning to experiences and expecting good ideals;action motivation includes reviewing successful experiences, exploring the meaning of life, and actively obtaining support. The factors affecting cancer patients’ sense of hope were found to be categorized into two modules: individual factors and external factors. The individual factors include the influence of life beliefs and the influence of special events;the external factors mainly refer to the influence of social support on cancer patients, specifically the influence of informal support and the influence of formal support..Thus,social workers can construct a reference path for social work to help enhance patients’ sense of hope in the medical field from the content of the above modules, mainly in terms of accepting reality, sublimating experience, and stimulating positive action. This is another spiral progress of social work in the medical field, which helps social workers to try better methods and more professional service activities in enhancing the level of hope,so as to help more patients and their families more efficiently and effectively. |
