| Research universities are an important part of regional higher education and the core power source of regional social development.To actively participate in regional social construction and promote the progress of regional society is the demand of regional social development for research universities,and it is also the inevitable path for research universities to improve their quality and upgrade.Therefore,it is of great significance to attach importance to the innovative and leading role of research universities in regional social development and to optimize the regional service function of research universities in China.Based on this important understanding,this study selects the United States,which has developed higher education and excellent regional services,as a reference to carry out a comparative study on the regional service functions of Chinese and American research universities,aiming to explore: What kind of regional service function do Chinese and American research universities play and how do they play the regional service function ?What are the common or different characteristics of the regional service functions of both of them and what are their characteristics? How to optimize the regional service function of research universities in China?Based on the symbiosis theory and theory of university function,using literature research,case study and comparative research,this study follow the "first points total" research train of thought to carry out various regional service functions of China-US research universities,represented by Tsinghua university and Zhejiang university research universities in China and represented by rice university and Georgia institute of technology.It also summarizes the characteristics of the regional service functions of Chinese and American research universities.The results show that the regional service functions of Chinese and American research universities not only have abundant common features,but also present significant differences in content,form and methods.The commonality lies in that both Chinese and American research-oriented universities,relying on their own development characteristics and regional development priorities,adhere to the principle of combining comprehensive services with key services to give full play to their regional service functions.In terms of content,it pays attention to the people’s livelihood of the region and focuses on improving the life happiness of the region.In form,we insist on building diversified service platforms and opening up three-dimensional service forms to enhance regional service intensity.Methodologies,relying on interdisciplinary research,it carry out comprehensive service problems research to break the service barriers.The difference is that Chinese research universities are more inclined to derive regional service functions from national service functions,while American research universities give consideration to both national service and regional service functions.In terms of content,China research universities pays more attention to the comprehensiveness of regional service functions and gives consideration to the four major functions.The US is more focused and targeted.Formally,Regional Service Organization of Chinese Research Universities prefer to rely on national service agencies to provide services,while the United States prefers to establish specialized agencies for regional social needs.In terms of methods,the number of interdisciplinary institutions established in China research universities is relatively small and their functions are relatively single.The United States is relatively large in quantity and comprehensive in function.Based on the above analysis,this study puts forward six optimization strategies for the regional service function of research universities in China.Namely,research universities should reconstruct the clear mission of regional service and enhance the awareness of regional service;Build a variety of regional service organizations,improve the regional service path;Open up a variety of regional service forms,increase the strength of regional service;Cohesive different regional resources to enhance the connotation of regional services;Optimize the functions of regional service and improve the quality of regional service;establish a firm concept of symbiosis and realize co-prosperity and symbiosis between universities and the region. |
