With the increasing international influence of China and the widespread dissemination of Chinese culture worldwide, more and more overseas students from all over the world are coming to China to study and experience Chinese culture. However,as’ travelers’,the objective cultural differences and related institutional settings present various adaptive challenges for international students studying in China, which also puts them in various social barriers. Therefore, international students studying in China face not only learning issues, but also cross-cultural adaptability issues. This study focuses on international students from J University who come to China.Based on the collection and review of relevant literature, qualitative research methods are used to conduct in-depth interviews with these students, exploring their difficulties and challenges in cross-cultural adaptation, analyzing the reasons for their cross-cultural adaptation difficulties, and using symbiosis theory to propose reasonable strategies to help them better achieve cross-cultural adaptation.Through research and analysis, this article mainly finds the following three aspects:firstly, from an overall analysis of international students studying in China,it is found that the reasons for international students studying in China mainly include individual willingness, policy guidance, and the promotion of others.Convenient and efficient social life, diversified food culture, and difficult to reconcile cultural conflicts are the overseas students’ perceptions of studying in China. The benefits of studying in China for international students mainly include improving their Chinese proficiency, increasing their sense of identification with Chinese culture, enhancing their cultural capital for social adaptation, and enhancing their cross-cultural social adaptability.Secondly, during the period of studying in China, international students generally face various maladaptive problems, which are reflected in the form of social segregation. In terms of language discrimination,Chinese proficiency hinders the daily communication and learning of international students in China, and cultural differences further increase the difficulty of their language communication. In terms of educational segregation, the convergence of management models has caused constraints in professional education and a disconnect between language learning and professional education. In terms of living areas, there is a significant differentiation in spiritual and cultural life, with significant differences in lifestyle habits. In terms of social network segmentation, international students studying in China face a "cultural shock" in the cyberspace and find it difficult to establish strong interactive networks with Chinese students. The third reason for the dilemma of cross-cultural adaptation among international students studying in China is multifaceted. The two-way construction process of the gap between international students studying in China and their external field has caused their dilemma of cross-cultural adaptation. This is reflected in four aspects: the lack of a language learning field, the formalization of educational assessment systems, the suspension of management systems, and the homogenization of social networks for international students studying in China.Based on the above research findings, this study combines symbiosis theory with social reality to help international students in China break free from various social barriers and achieve cross-cultural adaptation. From the perspective of "symbiosis",targeted suggestions are proposed as follows: firstly, build a symbiotic foundation at the micro level and enhance symbiotic units. The second is to optimize the symbiotic interface and improve the symbiotic mode at the meso level. The third is to improve the symbiotic system at the macro level and create a symbiotic field.
