The Ordinary High School Chemistry Curriculum Standard(2017 Edition 2020Revision)clearly puts forward the requirements of cultivating students’ core literacy of chemistry.Thereafter,the teachers have been concerned with how to cultivate it in chemistry teaching.The UbD(Understanding by Design theory)is a teaching design concept with the goal of “promoting students’ real understanding”.It advocates“starting from the end and evaluating first”,and puts forward three-stage reverse teaching design steps of “defining expected goals”,“selecting appropriate evaluation evidence” and “designing learning activities”.This approach can effectively avoid the pitfalls of traditional “activity-oriented” teaching design,and has a profound theoretical basis for cultivating students’ core literacy.The survey found that the current teaching of “molecular structure and properties”has problems such as abstract content,scattered knowledge points,and difficulty in migration and application.In response to the deficiencies in the teaching of this unit,the teacher urgently needs to explore a new teaching model that enables students to transfer learned knowledge effectively and achieve deep understanding,thus enhancing the effectiveness of the unit teaching.The UbD theory not only emphasizes students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills but also places greater emphasis on“learning transfer” and “meaningful understanding”,which is more conducive to implementing the requirements for cultivating the core literacy training in chemistry.Based on this,the author applies the UbD theory to the teaching of the “Molecular Structure and Properties” unit to address the deficiencies in this unit’s instruction,enhance the effectiveness of classroom teaching,and promote the development of students’ core literacy in the subject.The problems to be solved in this paper are as follows:(1)How can the UbD theory be applied to the teaching of the “Molecular Structure and Properties” unit?(2)Does the application of the UbD theory to the teaching of the “Molecular Structure and Properties” unit have practical effectiveness?To address these two research questions,this paper will adopt a research methodology that involves discovering problems,analyzing causes,establishing a teaching design framework,designing unit instruction,conducting teaching practices,and analyzing the practical effects of the practices.Firstly,the literature analysis method is used to sort out the research status of“UbD theory”,“unit teaching” and “molecular structure and properties”,and the advantages of UbD theory in unit teaching are expounded,which lays a theoretical foundation for the application of UbD theory in “molecular structure and properties”.Secondly,by conducting a questionnaire survey,diagnostic tests,and teacher interviews at a middle school in H city,the problems and causes of “Molecular Structure and Properties” in the teaching process were analyzed and summarized.The necessity of applying the UbD theory to the teaching of “Molecular Structure and Properties” was revealed.Thirdly,the application principles of UbD theory in unit teaching were sorted out,the framework of chemical unit teaching design based on UbD theory was established,and the unit teaching case was designed and practiced with “molecular structure and properties” as an example.Finally,conducting a t-test using SPSS23.0 to compare the post-test scores between the experimental group and the control group.The results showed a significant difference between the two groups,indicating that the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group in terms of understanding and mastering the knowledge.Through the analysis of the results from student questionnaire survey,it was found that the experimental class had higher scores than the control class in terms of learning interest,classroom participation,and the application and transfer of knowledge.The research findings indicate that the application of UbD theory to unit teaching is beneficial for students to transfer and structurally understand knowledge,thus enhancing the effectiveness of classroom teaching and implementing the cultivation of core literacy of chemistry.The innovation of this study lies in proposing a unit instructional design framework based on the elements of UbD theory and the principles of unit instructional design,which provides new research perspectives for future researchers in the field of UbD theory.
