| Reading is essential for personal development and is a means of advancing a nation’s civilization. The inclusion of whole-book reading in the Language Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022)has attracted more attention from the academic community.Children’s reading is the cornerstone of national literacy.Alfred North Whitehead,a renowned British philosopher and educator, believed that children in elementary school are in the first stage of intellectual development, the romantic stage, and that the romantic spirit-an emotion of curiosity, imagination, exploration, and creative excitement-is mainly expressed in this stage.Education should take care of and expand this inherent quality hidden in children’s lives. However,in the current teaching of whole-book reading in elementary school, the romantic spirit is often neglected or even damaged by compulsory training. This includes ignoring the romantic spirit of children with utilitarian teaching purposes, limiting the selection of reading materials, and employing programmatic and mechanical teaching methods that restrict children’s natural romantic nature. This study aims to enlighten whole-book reading teaching in China’s elementary schools and further stimulate and cultivate children’s interest and ability in reading. The paper is divided into five parts: introduction, exploring Whitehead’s romantic spirit idea, discussing the historical origin, meaning, and value of whole-book reading in elementary schools, examining the problems in the current teaching of whole-book reading in elementary schools from the perspective of Whitehead’s romantic spirit, and providing recommendations for promoting the romantic spirit in the purpose of reading, the selection of books, and the teaching method. The introduction provides the reason for choosing this topic,a literature review,a definition of relevant concepts, research purpose and significance, research ideas and methods, and innovation points. The second part delves into Whitehead’s romantic spirit idea, analyzing and sorting out the concept of romance, why the romantic spirit is important, and how to care for it.The third part examines the historical origin, meaning, characteristics, and value of whole-book reading in elementary schools. The fourth part highlights the current problems in teaching whole-book reading in elementary schools from the perspective of Whitehead’s romantic spirit, including the tendency to ignore children’s romantic spirit, the limited choice of reading materials, and the programmatic and mechanical teaching methods. Finally, the fifth part proposes recommendations for promoting the romantic spirit in the purpose of reading, the selection of books, and the teaching method. This includes valuing children’s emotional experience in reading, enriching reading themes, and prioritizing children’s free reading.Overall, this study aims to enlighten whole-book reading teaching in China’s elementary schools and further stimulate and cultivate children’s interest and ability in reading. |
