In the early 1980s,family planning policies in China created many one-child families, but when the only child died,a special social group emerged: single-parent families. As a result of this policy, the quality of life and social support for families who lost a child are directly related to social stability and human well-being.In this paper, social support theory is used as a theoretical foundation and a social work case study approach is used as a practical method to understand the fate and needs of bereaved families. The hope is that social work intervention will motivate families to start a new life, rebuild social support networks, and improve their quality of life. This paper summarizes lessons learned from case studies of supporting the rebuilding of social support networks of families without loved ones into a multi-actor social work model of "family + community + social work agency + government" and describes how social workers can hopefully provide a viable model to support rebuilding in the future. |
