Mathematics extracurricular reading is an important part of students’ mathematics learning,which plays an important role in stimulating students’ interest in mathematics learning,improving students’ core quality in mathematics,and inheriting mathematics culture and humanistic spirit.With the deepening of mathematics curriculum reform,mathematics extracurricular reading has been paid more and more attention.Many teachers use mathematics reading to broaden students’ vision and stimulate students’ enthusiasm for learning mathematics.Questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation were used to investigate the mathematics extracurricular reading and instruction in Grade 3-6 of W Primary School in Y City,from six dimensions:understanding of mathematics extracurricular reading,content of mathematics extracurricular reading,time of mathematics extracurricular reading,methods of mathematics extracurricular reading,environment of mathematics extracurricular reading and guidance of mathematics extracurricular reading.According to the survey,the following problems exist in elementary school mathematics extracurricular reading and guidance:teachers and students have insufficient understanding of the particularity of extracurricular reading of mathematics;Students are exposed to less mathematics extracurricular reading resources;Students devote less time to mathematics extracurricular reading;Students have not mastered effective mathematics extracurricular reading methods;Teachers’ guidance of mathematics extracurricular reading is lacking of purpose.The main reason is that teachers lack of mathematics extracurricular reading related theoretical guidance;Teachers,schools and families ignore the importance of mathematics reading resources and environment;Students homework,interest classes more,less discretionary time;Students have less math reading experience,and their ability to summarize reading methods is not strong.The teacher failed to distinguish between "mathematics extracurricular reading instruction" and"mathematics teaching".Based on the investigation of the current situation of mathematics extracurricular reading in W Primary school,the existing problems are found and the reasons are explored.On this basis,five improvement strategies are proposed:conducting teacher training to enhance teachers’ and students’ understanding of mathematics reading;Provide abundant mathematics extracurricular books,good reading environment;Reduce the burden of students,reasonable arrangement of mathematics extracurricular reading time;Instruct students to use mathematics reading method;Instruct students to read mathematics outside the classroom with purpose.
