| The ability to perform operations is one of the core literacies of Mathematics at junior secondary level and plays an important role in the teaching of Mathematics. At the same time, the addition and subtraction of whole equations is a leap from “numbers” to “algebraic equations”,involving more complex mathematical operations, and it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study its developmental status and influencing factors. This study focuses on “What is the current status of Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations?” “What are the factors that affect Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations?” “What are some teaching strategies to improve the ability to add and subtract whole equations?” Three questions were used to develop the study. In this study,303 students and six mathematics teachers from two secondary schools in Changji City were used as the research subjects to investigate the current situation and the influencing factors of seventh grade students’ ability of addition and subtraction of whole equations in operations using literature analysis, test papers, questionnaires and interviews.Firstly, with reference to Zhu Xiandong and Wu Zengsheng’s classification of arithmetic ability levels and combined with Professor Lu Hong’s classification of arithmetic ability components and the content requirements for addition and subtraction of whole equations in the Compulsory Education Mathematics Curriculum Standard(2022 Edition),a framework for assessing the arithmetic ability of seventh grade students in addition and subtraction of whole equations was prepared, and an arithmetic ability test paper was designed on this basis.Secondly,a questionnaire and teacher interview outline were designed in order to investigate the factors affecting Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations. Finally, the test paper, questionnaire and interviews were implemented and the findings were analysed using software such as SPSS 21.0.The survey and analysis revealed that the current situation of Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations is as follows:(1)the overall level of Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations is moderately low;(2)the analysis of the students’ level of arithmetic reveals that the number of students at the moderate level is high, but the number of students at the high or higher level is relatively small;(3)the difference in the level of arithmetic ability between urban and rural students is significant.By collating the survey data,it was found that the factors affecting Grade 7 students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations were:(1)students’ “double foundation” was not solid;(2)students did not have good arithmetic habits;(3)students lacked a positive attitude towards arithmetic;(4)students lacked mathematical confidence;(5)students’ basic knowledge of primary school mathematics was weak;(6)teachers’ interpretation of the standards was not thorough;and(7)teachers’ teaching standards needed to be improved.Based on the above analysis, the following teaching strategies are proposed:(1)attaching importance to the concepts and laws related to integers to consolidate basic mathematical knowledge;(2)focusing on cultivating good mathematical operation habits;(3)focusing on cultivating students’ positive attitudes towards operations;(4)enhancing teachers’ mathematical literacy to precisely implement teaching objectives;and(5)establishing a diversified assessment system to enhance students’ confidence in learning mathematics. On this basis,in order to combine theory and practice effectively, the researcher incorporated teaching strategies into the teaching design with a view to improving the level of seventh grade students’ ability to add and subtract whole equations. |
