In recent years, the loss of family emotional security has gradually become a serious problem in the development of China’s independent family, and even the number of independent families has gradually increased. This study attempts to explore an effective way to improve the sense of meaning of life of the elderly who lost their independence from the perspective of social work, relying on narrative therapy and carrying out case service. This study takes grandpa Z,an elderly man who lost his independence in J community of W City,as the service object, and carries out 13 case services through participatory observation and semi-structured interview. The author measured the patients with the sense of life scale and the elderly depression scale, and the results were 28 points and 17 points respectively. Then, combined with the interview, the author found three factors leading to the low sense of meaning of life: poor health, unable to resolve sadness, and lack of social communication. In this regard, under the support of narrative therapy theory, the author takes the rich life experience of the case owner as the narrative basis, resolves the sadness of the case owner by means of problem externalization, story reconstruction and definition ceremony, encourages him to actively participate in social communication and enhance the sense of meaning of life.In the whole process of intervention, the case owner has changed positively. The post-test scores of the two scales were 48 and 11.Grandpa Z has also changed from being immersed in sadness all day and unwilling to communicate with others, even with a certain sense of pessimism,to regaining his former interests and hobbies, taking the initiative to help the elderly around him, taking the initiative to contact colleagues and friends, slowly regaining his confidence in life, and his physical condition has gradually improved. After the case work, the author evaluated the implementation effect of the whole case service through the combination of scale post-test comparison, case owner’s self-report and social worker observation, and summarized the results and limitations of case intervention,so as to provide reference and reference for the research on the application of narrative therapy in the field of the elderly who lost their independence in the future.
