A Study Of Gender Roles In Digital Women’s Communities

As a new socialization space,digital women’s communities influence the socialization process of women,reflect the social relations that shape women’s gender role perceptions,reflect the complexity and contradictions of women’s empowerment in new media,and highlight the awakening process of contemporary women’s consciousness.This study considers the communication practices of digital women’s communities as a "living practice" of women’s discourse and their gender role perceptions.Based on a large number of previous studies,First,we clarify the basic connotations of digital women’s communities,gender role perceptions and gender discourse.Second,we sort out the basic status of digital women’s communities;Finally,we adopt a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods and participatory observation,taking the "Little Women’s Gang" community on Douban as a key case,analyze 868 hot posts,deeply discuss the discourse status of female users in this digital community and their perception of gender roles.At the same time,11 community users were interviewed by in-depth interview method,and the formation mechanism of gender role perceptions in this digital community was discussed.Finally,this paper analyzes the real-life context of gender role perceptions in digital women’s communities.The findings of this paper are as follows: the digital women’s community as a whole presents gender role perceptions that are biased toward the traditional gender and power reality of society,but there is no lack of some new concepts;technological regulation,member interaction,and community culture together shape the gender role perceptions of community members,especially member interaction,which can be regarded as a digital practice of women’s consciousness awakening;the traditional gender culture’s regulation of women extends to the digital women’s community and internalized by women as gender role identity.
