Semiotic Interpretation Of University Admission Notice

As a ticket for students to realize their life value and continue to pursue educational opportunities,college admission notice has a profound impact on their individual,family and even the whole family.As far as colleges and universities are concerned,the admission notice,as the first token of direct contact with students,is an important carrier for colleges and universities to carry forward the university spirit,highlight the characteristic culture,reflect the academic attitude,and condense the concept of education.In fact,the admission notice of different periods are endowed with the distinctive characteristics of the times,carrying the cultural symbols of different times.Since the ancient imperial examination had admission notice,it has experienced several key nodes in the period of the Republic of China,the early days of the People’s Republic of China,after the reform and opening up,and after the 21 st century.On the surface,the notice is a kind of notice issued by colleges and universities to agree the candidates to study in the school,which implies the dynamic relationship between the educational system,social culture and the meaning of personal life.After Saussure first put forward modern semiotics,it has experienced the inheritance and development of Pierce,Jacobson,Morris and other generations,and now it has formed a complete semiotic theoretical system.Based on the basic theory of semiotics,this paper uses Morris’ s semiotic trichotomy theory framework to classify and interpret university admission notices.That is: the study of the classification,color,structure,technology and aesthetic characteristics of the admission notice;the study of the symbol,university spirit and cultural connotation of the admission notice;the study of the relationship between the admission notice and students,schools and society.Through the division and comparison of the collected and mastered notice samples,the year 2000 is the latest time node for the great difference of admission notice.In this paper,the admission notice before2000 is called the traditional admission notice,and then it is defined as the contemporary admission notice.From "a piece of paper" to "a package",the materials and contents of university admission notice are gradually increasing,and its educational concept,cultural characteristics,humanistic care and so on are also changing accordingly.With Morris’ s Semiotics as the theoretical tool,this paper examines the contemporary notice from the three levels of symbol structure,symbol meaning and symbol function:compared with the traditional admission notice,at the level of symbol structure,the text symbol and image symbol of the contemporary notice are more rich,three-dimensional and personalized,with the addition of color symbol and material symbol,aesthetic and practical coexisting.At the symbolic level,the symbolic meaning of the admission notice gradually transits from thinking of national construction and serving the people to adding glory to the family and building dreams for the individual,reflecting the changes and development of socialist ideology and economic system.In the aspect of compliance,it shows that the original function of "notice" of admission notice is gradually diminishing,but the cultural and technical information,the educational concept and spirit,and the emotional and innovative factors are constantly enriched,expanded and enlarged with the times.
