| Geography is a discipline that combines the nature of natural science and humanities and social sciences. It is particularly distinguished by its comprehensive and practical character. With the advancement of curriculum reform, teachers need to continuously learn advanced educational concepts in order to meet the demand for multi-disciplinary talents and cultivate students’ geographic core competence in the new era.In recent years,STEAM education, which emerged in the United States, has become a hot topic of educational research. The concepts of interdisciplinary, comprehensive thinking and problem solving advocated by STEAM education are compatible with the characteristics of geography, which enable students to apply geographic knowledge to practical learning activities and give full play to their imagination and aesthetic concepts through technology, engineering and other means. And it has practical significance for improving students’ hands-on practice, communication and cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Therefore, this study combines the STEAM education concept with the high school geography teaching by means of project-based activities. This paper studies the feasible project-based activity process, and designs specific teaching cases for teaching practice. The purpose is to provide reference and discussion in the improvement of high school geography teaching methods and the localization of STEAM education.Firstly, through literature research, this study summarizes the domestic and foreign research status of STEAM education,STEAM geography education and STEAM project-based activities. On this basis,we define the concepts of STEAM education concept,project-based activities, etc. And the theoretical basis of this research is established as constructivist learning theory,"learning by doing" education theory and multiple intelligences theory.Secondly, based on the requirements of geographic core competence in the high school curriculum standard,we put forward the design principles and teaching objectives of geographic project-based activities under the STEAM concept in high school. Then we sort out the STEAM activities in the compulsory and optional compulsory textbooks of high school geography of the People’s Education Press.A set of STEAM project-based activity processes suitable for high school geography teaching are summarized through case analysis. The STEAM project-based activity process consists of three stages: preparation stage, implementation stage, and evaluation stage.Following the process,we design a project case for typhoon disasters, disaster prevention and mitigation, and sponge cities in compulsory one of the People’s Education Edition. The project case includes three STEAM activities: "Exploring the ’Behind the Scenes’-Typhoon","Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Sharing Session" and "Designing a Sponge City".Finally, practice teaching explores the feasibility and effectiveness of project-based activities under the STEAM concept in high school geography teaching through the controlled experiment method. And we put forward the problems found in the teaching practice and the corresponding solutions. The results of this study indicate that:(1)It is feasible to apply the STEAM education concept to high school geography teaching. The STEAM education concept can arouse the learning interest and enthusiasm of students at all levels, and improve their learning efficiency and ability.(2)Project-based activities are an effective way to practice the STEAM concept. With the advancement of project-based activities, students gradually adapt to and integrate into the situation, and improve their STEAM competence in the process of project solving.(3)Compared with the traditional way of geography teaching, the project-based activities under the STEAM concept can better highlight the dominant position of the students and help improve the students’ geographic core competence. |
