In recent years, the number of international students in China has continued to increase. In order to quickly integrate into the local society and smoothly start their study and life in China, understanding and familiarizing with Chinese society and culture has become a compulsory course for many international students. In an era where the Internet and smartphone are so developed, the media is an important means for international students to learn about Chinese society and culture, and it is also an important factor that affects their Chinese cultural identity. This article takes the international students from Yunnan University as the research object, studies their media use in China and the status quo of Chinese cultural identity, and combines the two to study their relevance, and explores whether media use affects Chinese cultural identity of international students and how to make an impact. This study is based on the theory of "Use and Satisfaction" and cultural identity theory, using the method of questionnaire survey,to conduct a sample survey of the foreign students in Yunnan University. The collected questionnaire data is statistically analyzed using SPSS software. At the same time, regarding the subjective issues that cannot be surveyed in the questionnaire, such as the reasons for the large differences in media usage preferences and media content preferences of international students in China, the specific types of foreign students’ preference for media with a strong tendency to use,and the use of Chinese media by international students, the author carried out in-depth interviews to make up for the insufficiency of the questionnaire survey.Research shows that after coming to China, international students tend to use social platforms, movies, and websites, but they are less interested in books and broadcasting.Second, the overall Chinese cultural identity of international students is relatively high. For Chinese culture, their appreciation is greater than their understanding. From the perspective of cultural categories, international students have the highest recognition of institutional culture, followed by spiritual culture and material culture. Finally, the use time of social media platforms and broadcasting media has a significant impact on the Chinese cultural identity of international students. The former causes great differences in the three aspects of cultural cognition, cultural emotion and overall cultural identity of international students, while the latter significantly affects the international students’ cultural cognition. There is a positive correlation between the media content of making friends and shopping and the Chinese cultural identity of international students. The media use motivation and media use effect of international students have a significant positive impact on their Chinese cultural identity. The results of the study remind us that,as cultural communicators,we should pay attention to the complexity and correlation between the media and the cultural identity of international students. When we use Chinese media to promote students’ understanding of Chinese society and culture,we should improve international students’ recognition of Chinese culture and develop international Chinese education and communication. |
