| Intergenerational mobility is the main content of social structure research and the basic issue of social fairness and justice. It presents the current social stratification and represents the degree of social openness.Education,as the foundation of a country, has been attached great importance by the ruling class since ancient times. It is even more common to say that "universities change destiny",which is not only a vivid expression of education’s role in promoting upward mobility of the class, but also a reflection of the public’s universal yearning for high class status. However,in recent years, the rapid development of higher education, the number of people receiving higher education surge, the imbalance of supply and demand of labor market brings new employment contradictions, thousands of troops and thousands of people across the bridge is common,a time,"reading useless theory","ants of college students" comments flooded the media,Arouse the social circles to "whether higher education can promote the upward mobility of the class" examination and inquiry. The relationship between higher education and class mobility has become a classic issue in social and educational circles. This study utilized data from the China Household Income Survey(CHIP)and used empirical research methods to vertically compare the occupational class and social mobility status of individuals at different stages of higher education development since1988;Then,it constructs a multiple logistic regression model to analyze the role of higher education in the mobility of the children in different stages; Finally, based on the current situation of higher education recipients in different periods and the different impacts of higher education on class mobility, policy recommendations are proposed that are conducive to the future development of higher education in China and the reasonable mobility of social classes.Based on theoretical analysis and empirical research conclusions,we conclude that firstly, the social class structure in China exhibits a characteristic of "large in the middle and small at both ends",with the main proportion of the population being mainly composed of the middle class, which has been relatively stable in recent decades.Second,in terms of intergenerational distribution of the professional class, the inheritance of the middle and lower classes of society has increased. The high professional class also has professional barriers, and other classes are not easy to enter. The middle class has strong mobility.Thirdly,in the direction of class mobility, with the development of higher education, intergenerational mobility has gradually become dominated by horizontal mobility, and upward mobility has experienced a trend of stable growth followed by slow changes. In terms of class mobility,at various stages, the majority of higher educated individuals have improved compared to their father’s occupational class, but this increase has always been small, and those who have not received higher education have always been in a disadvantaged position.Fourthly, compared to the stage of distributing employment among higher education elites and selecting professions independently by elites, higher education still has a significant promoting effect on the mobility of future generations’ occupational classes during the stage of independent career selection by elites and popularization. However, this promoting effect is showing a weakening trend. Therefore, this study puts forward countermeasures and suggestions from the perspectives of the government, society, universities and graduates,in order to promote the reasonable mobility of classes, help the child group to establish the correct concept of study and employment, and strive to realize the value of life. |
