A Study On Political Polarization In Hong Kong During 1997-2020

The world has entered a period of drastic change,and every country and region has been affected.As a highly open region,Hong Kong has also suffered from the storm.In recent years,there are several social movements happening in Hongkong.Those conflicts revealed the hidden contradictions which was deeply hidden in the society.This paper analyzes the trend of polarization which was revealed in political,social and cultural fields in Hong Kong from 1997 to 2020.This paper mainly makes a conclusion about the causes,trends and future development of the polarization problem in Hong Kong.This study discusses from the perspective of political sociology,focuses on the interaction between politics and society in Hong Kong’s political life,and analyzes the ways in which various elements in the interaction between society and politics affect political polarization through the observation of political system design,social and economic structure,political culture and psychology.The following views are obtained through the research.First of all,the historical influence of the political system and democratic paradigm has led to structural contradictions in the exercise of power and the balance of power in the constitutional framework of the HKSAR government after the return.It is difficult to implement the administration-led system effectively,and there is a lack of powerful power tools to correct the trend of political polarization.Secondly,the adjustment of industrial structure lags behind the needs of economic development,which hinders the sustainable development of economy,resulting in the decline of economic superiority,the fall of the middle class and the solidification of social class give rise to the sense of social loss,and the inherent defects of capitalist market economy are not conducive to the narrowing of the gap between the rich and the poor,which weakens the sense of social gain.These together constitute the breeding ground for polarizing emotions.Thirdly,the political identity and cultural psychology of Hong Kong society have a strong historical dependence.The disconnection between political cultural identity and current political system provides opportunities for the development of political polarization.Also,the infiltration of external forces combined with local separatism in Hong Kong formed a joint force to split the society.Finally,the development of technology makes it easier for external influences to spread through the Internet,and contributing to the expansion of political polarization in Hong Kong.The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is faced with new difficulties in the political,economic,social and cultural fields,which require the joint response of the central government and the SAR government.With the introduction of the National Security Law and the implementation of the new election system,the development trend of political polarization in Hong Kong will be effectively curtailed.However,due to the existence of political polarization in Hong Kong,there are stubborn historical and structural factors,and it still needs a long-term plan to eradicate this phenomenon.
