| Abkhazia and Adjara were both autonomous republics of Georgia, but eventually the Abkhazia secession issue expanded and the issue of Adjara secession was resolved peacefully.Sorting through the historical roots of the two places,Abkhazia was an independent state and lacked identity for Georgians. The Adjara is a branch of the Georgian ethnic group, with different religious beliefs but common cultural traditions. As a result,Abkhazia is more centrifugal than Adjara. After the collapse of the Soviet Union,Nationalism is rampant, the frozen contradictions and conflicts within the country have intensified, and Georgia became a key channel for Western countries to strive for regional dominance, creating conditions for other participants to intervene in the separatist issue. The issue of pure secession was an internal affair, but there has always been asymmetries between Georgia and the breakaway regions.Abkhazia received external assistance, confrontation with the central government, even received political recognition from Russia after the Russian-Georgian war,and the issue of secession had a basis for expansion;Adjara was internally divided, and leaders promoted separatist movements in search of authoritarian rule, the separatist forces were scattered and external intervention was not strong, finally it was peacefully recovered. The issue of separation stems from historical entanglements, but conflict cann’t bring benefits, and only through equal mediation can make the interests of all parties be maximized. The issue of Abkhazia separatism is difficult to be completely resolved under the current political realities, and it is still necessary to build the basis for reconciliation through the strengthening of unified management by the central Government of Georgia and strategic cooperation among external forces. |
