| The rapid development of modern cities has led to frequent "urban diseases" such as environmental pollution and housing shortages. The impact of these issues is even more profound in the old urban areas, and the difficulty and complexity of addressing them are more pronounced. As a result, the urban development model has shifted towards urban renewal, moving from large-scale construction to upgrading and structural adjustment of existing buildings. In this process, there is enormous potential for the transformation of old urban areas. There are various ways to approach urban renewal, and the current predominant value logic is either commercially or residentially oriented. It is not an easy task to promote economic development while also ensuring a harmonious living environment.A challenging aspect of urban renewal is identifying the funding for redevelopment projects. As the primary place where residents establish close connections with their local community and other people, neighborhood public spaces have a lasting impact on residents’ sense of place. Therefore, the reconstruction of public spaces is a crucial focus of urban renewal.Chengdu,as an ancient city with a vast area of old urban districts and a rich history and culture, has significant cultural significance in terms of urban conservation. Its experience in urban renewal is being promoted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. This study focuses on Chengdu as the research site and uses typical cases of small communities in the old urban areas of Chengdu as representatives. This study starts from the attributes of space and divides the basic types of neighborhood communities in the space based on livability and productivity.Using statistical analysis software such as SPSS and Amos, factor analysis, variance analysis, and other methods are employed to construct a structural equation model to analyze the impact of neighborhood community spatial characteristics on residents’ sense of place. The study shows that:(1)Livability and productivity have a certain impact on residents’ sense of place, but the degree of influence of each dimension is different;(2)Residents’ sense of dependence is positively influenced by comfort, facility layer, and management layer, while residents’ sense of attachment is positively influenced by security and the management layer.Meanwhile, the sense of dependence and attachment are positively correlated, and the facility layer has a negative impact on residents’ sense of attachment;(3)There is a certain correlation between the four exogenous latent variables of livability and productivity, and the degree of correlation between different dimensions varies;(4)Significant differences exist between residents with different demographic characteristics regarding their sense of place.Based on the above research results, this study elaborates on the constraints of enhancing residents’ sense of place, explores the applicability of urban renewal models, and reduces the cost of urban renewal. Finally, the study proposes recommendations for enhancing residents’ sense of place: In terms of livability, priority should be given to the construction of a safe environment in public spaces, followed by increased efforts in public infrastructure construction and management, and optimization of green environment construction in public spaces. In terms of productivity, first,it is necessary to improve the construction of commercial service facilities, secondly,to protect historical heritage and continue the cultural heritage of the neighborhood, and finally,to innovate management and operation concepts and methods. |
