The year 2023 marks the tenth year of the term "telling China’s story well".Since2013,this important discussion has produced profound influence on China’s international communication.American think tanks,such as the Hoover Institution,the Center for Asian Policy Studies and the Heritage Foundation,have carried out a great deal of knowledge production and thought dissemination on the topic of "telling China’s story well".As institutions with high academic level and influence in the production of professional thoughts and knowledge,American think tanks play an important role in the political decision-making and public opinion ecology of the United States as the receivers of information related to "telling China’s story well" and the transmitters of information as "opinion leaders".The purpose of this study is to analyze the research texts of American think tanks on "telling China’s story well",to understand what kind of cognitive attitude and evaluation it presents,as well as the construction path and causes,so as to put forward the strategies of establishing think tanks’ positive cognitive attitude and evaluation on "telling China’s story well",and to provide references for China’s "telling China’s story well".Ten American think tanks with a long research time and strong influence under the topic of "Telling China’s story well" are selected as research objects in this study.A total of 61 reports,36 reviews,17 news reports and 9 interviews are collected.A total of 123 research documents and more than one million words of research text are taken as research samples.The content analysis and text analysis of the collected samples are mainly based on the framework theory and the auxiliary analysis of corpus,and the attitude and evaluation of American think tank texts on the topic of "telling China’s story well" are mainly summarized.The research finds that American think tanks form the attitude and evaluation of "telling China stories well" through the four construction ways of "hostility","contempt","war" and "facts".On this basis,the paper studies four construction modes with the help of the "interpretive package" theory and draws the following conclusions: The "hostile framework" believes that China is a "malicious actor" in global governance,and the relevant actions of "telling the China story well" are low in credibility and associated with malice,so the United States and its partners need to be more vigilant against China;The "contempt framework" holds that the effect of "Telling China’s Story Well" is extremely limited whether it is an improper propaganda behavior or not;The "War framework" regards China as a competitor,and holds that all the actions of "Telling China’s Story Well" are linked to China’s great power strategy."Telling China’s Story Well" is shaped as propaganda war and information war.In the field of information communication,China and the United States are in a competitive relationship."Fact Frame" does not make subjective evaluation of "Telling China’s Story Well",but shows the communication effect of "Telling China’s Story Well" through public opinion research or article translation,and there is a situation of partial sample selection.On the macro level,there is a convergence of attitude and evaluation in the four types of construction methods of "telling China’s story well" in the American think tank text,while on the micro level,there is a diversified picture of different results in the problem tracing,effect,attribution and response.This study proposes the following suggestions for constructing positive attitudes and evaluations about "Telling China’s Story Well",building common identity to break stereotypes,Standardizing expression forms at the media level to enhance discourse dominance,play the role of think tanks to enhance exchanges and mutual learning at the think tank level,enhance media literacy and enhance the power of folk narration. |
