| In recent years, the West has frequently used the stigmatizing discourse of "wolf warrior diplomacy" to create a negative image of Chinese diplomacy. This study explores the process of constructing the stigmatized discourse of "wolf warrior diplomacy" by combining the concepts of communication, sociology and international relations. This paper traces the discourse of "wolf warrior diplomacy" and finds that "wolf warrior diplomacy" is a stigmatized discourse that originated in the Chinese context and was subsequently borrowed by the United States to recreate and render it popular in Western countries. Therefore, this paper analyzes the content, construction method,socio-historical context and essence of the U.S.construction of the stigmatized discourse of "wolf warrior diplomacy" from the surface to the inside.By using Ruth Wodak’s discourse-historical analysis and computer-assisted textual analysis, this paper analyzes the process of constructing the stigmatized discourse of "wolf warrior diplomacy" by the U.S.government,media and think tanks. The study finds that the U.S.government negatively interprets China’s diplomatic intentions, the media distorts perceptions to construct the social reality of "wolf warrior diplomacy," and the professional research of think tanks paraphrases and highlights the dangers of "wolf warrior diplomacy".The "wolf warrior diplomacy" stigmatized discourse has been recreated, distributed and consumed. The U.S.stigmatization of Chinese diplomacy serves its own strategic interests, and the content of the constructed discourse of so-called "wolf warrior diplomacy" has its own focus at different stages:at the stage of stigmatization, the focus is on the so-called "aggressive" words and actions of Chinese diplomats who are "wolf warriors".In the stage of stigma formation,"wolf warrior diplomacy" refers to the propaganda tactics used by Chinese diplomats to develop a global narrative by spreading false information in the context of the new epidemic;in the stage of stigma development,it emphasizes that "wolf warrior diplomacy" is challenging and undermining all aspects of "democracy, freedom, human rights" and national security in the U.S.-led Western society. From the perspective of scholar Rebecca Adler-Nissen’s theory on international stigmatization, the U.S.has resorted to stigmatizing Chinese diplomacy because it believes that the stigma management strategy adopted by Chinese diplomacy will "weaken" and"shake" the international order dominated by it.This, coupled with the global loss of selfconfidence in American-style democracy, has led the United States to construct a discursive trap of "wolf warrior diplomacy" in which "the scolding cannot be returned. |
