| This practice report investigates the interpreter’s effort coordination in a remote interpreting setting.The practice was for a remote course“Curriculum Development”of a Ph.D.program from November 21st,2021 to January 16th,2022,where the author’s tasks included class monitoring,slide-reading,listening,note-taking,note-reading and reformulation.The professor in the virtual classroom mainly relied on visual aid such as a Power Point file to facilitate her teaching and control the pace of the classroom.The task is a combination of consecutive interpreting and sight interpreting that requires the writer to readjust his efforts frequently.Additionally,the writer should also pay attention to whether the students are keeping up.How to coordinate these efforts is the writer’s priority.Such coordination of effort is also mentioned by Gile who proposed an Effort Model in which coordination is throughout the whole process of interpreting,but he did not elaborate on its role in different settings.The writer intends to analyze the role of coordination in an online class setting.Based on detailed analysis of his interpreting practice,this report offers tactics for effort coordination,and suggests more efforts be distributed for students monitoring,listening and reformulation.It is also advisable to use omission and explanatory rendering to alleviate pressure.The writer hopes this report might supplement Effort Model and be helpful for interpreters who would work for remote interpreting in an educational setting. |
