Currently, there is a lack of empirical research that examines the composition of interpreter behavioral competency.Taking the perspective of human resource management, this thesis aims to build a general interpreter behavioral competency model,so as to provide a reference for interpreting learners, interpreters, interpreting education, and employers.First, the theoretical basis and research objectives were established through literature review and keyword co-occurrence analysis. Then, using Spencer and Spencer’s generic competency model as a coding tool, the author conducted a word frequency analysis on a sample of interpreter job descriptions, invited 3 senior interpreters and 3 MTI students to conduct behavioral event interviews, and developed a preliminary framework of interpreter behavioral competency based on the results. On this basis,a questionnaire was designed to investigate the perceptions on the importance of interpreter behavioral competency elements among freelance interpreters,full-time interpreters, college interpreting teachers, people with plans or experience in hiring interpreters,MTI Students, and people who have taken interpreting courses(excluding MTI student).Meanwhile, the questionnaire aimed to explore effective measures for universities to improve MTI students’ behavioral competency. The data analysis shows that interpreters behavioral competency consists of 24 factors in 5 clusters(Personal Effectiveness,Problem-Solving Skills,Social Awareness and Skills,Achievement and Action, and Self-Management).In order of importance, the clusters can be divided into 3 levels and the factors into 5 levels. In addition,it was found that applying Project-Based Learning, employing excellent interpreters as off-campus advisors, and providing internship opportunities will be useful for universities to strengthen MTI students’ interpreter behavioral competency.
