As China’s comprehensive strength increasingly improves,Chinese culture has attracted worldwide attention. In recent years,China has been constantly opening up to the outside world, spreading Chinese culture around the world. In the long history of Chinese culture, there have been numerous representative classics of traditional Chinese culture, among which the Analects is one of the most typical. It had a significant effect on people’s thoughts and cultures at home and abroad. Therefore,it contains profound academic value. This thesis will select Gu Hongming’s and Arthur Waley’s versions of the Analects as the research object, and make a comparative analysis of the translation of culture-loaded words in these two versions from the perspective of the translator’s subjectivity. This thesis aims to discuss the differences in the translation of culture-loaded words in Gu’s and Waley’s English versions from the perspective of the translator’s subjectivity, namely the subjective initiative, passiveness and purposiveness.Nida classified the culture of a certain language community into five categories, including, ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture, and linguistic culture. This thesis adopts Nida’s classification and analyzes the manifestation of the translator’s subjectivity in the translation process and the reasons behind the differences in translation. The comparative analysis shows that the translation strategies the two translators employ are different, and such differences are caused by the restrictions they experience and their different ways of embodying subjective initiative.
