Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on C-E translation of Chapter Six “The Culture of Mediation”in Traditional Legal Culture in China. This book elaborates on the specific structure and development of traditional Chinese legal culture, and shows the achievements of legal practice for thousands of years and the extensive and profound ancient Chinese legal thought. The purpose of the report is to put forward the useful translation compensation methods by summarizing and analyzing the difficulties in translating culture-loaded words,so as to provide some suggestions and references for future translation practice in this aspect. The translation material contains a large number of culture-loaded words with rich cultural connotations and complex semantic meanings related to China’s mediation culture. However, readers from different languages and cultural backgrounds have their own fixed cognitive structures and ways of expression, leading to cultural defaults, which hinders the target readers’ understanding of culture-loaded words.Translation is a process of cross-cultural and cross-lingual information transmission, and the essence is communication. As the subject of receiving end in the international communication of Chinese culture, target readers’ comprehension of Chinese cultural information is an important standard to measure successful dissemination of Chinese culture in the world. Therefore, based on the language habits and cognitive characteristics of the target readers, the translator focuses on their acceptability to the target-text information, and adopts appropriate translation compensation methods, which can enable the target readers to realize the cultural meanings of culture-loaded words, and to overcome the cultural and linguistic barriers caused by obvious differences in legal systems and cultures.
