The contextualization of abstract concepts is of great importance to understand these notions with vague, fluid and flexible meanings in the legal translation practices. Some abstract concepts in legal texts contain abundant legal knowledge of legal opinions of the author, which leads to the challenge that requires the translators to translate the legal knowledge or meaning in to Chinese accurately. For this purpose,a translator is required to fully conform to the context of the source text so as to convey the precise meaning to the target language readers. The translation of complete meaning included in abstract concepts may be conducive for Chinese juristic research to take deep learning and absorption of legal opinions thereof to promote the development of rule of law in China. The existing researches mainly focus on the translation strategies of abstract nouns, while the context and comprehension of abstract concepts which are the main concerns of this report are relatively rarely addressed. In order to enrich the contextualization study and present the manifestation of abstract concepts, this report will select examples from Amicus Curiae before International Courts and Tribunals and concentrate on the comprehension of abstract concepts in source text to reach corresponding translation methods which will embody the meaning of such abstract concepts.Informed by the analysis of abstract concepts, this report concludes that such translation methods as literal translation and free translation and such translation technique as amplification and interpretation can apply to manifest the meaning of abstract concepts in source text, and summarize the contributions and limitations. |
