In recent years,more and more China made films and TV dramas are translated into foreign languages and shown in international markets.China has a long history of C-E translation of domestic films.Such activities began in the 1920 s.However,the quality of translated works varies.Most domestic dubbing translation studies focus on translation of English films and TV dramas into Chinese with only few on English translation of domestic products.As a result,systematic studies on English dubbing translation of domestic films and TV dramas are much in need.As a graduate MTI student,the author translated the Chinese script of New My Fair Princess S3E4 as English dubbing script during her internship at Star Times.The dubbed version of the series is now available online on the Sino Drama channel.This report focuses on the changes and improvements she made by comparing the first draft with the final of the English dubbing script of New My Fair Princess S3E4.Under the guidance of the principles of translation of dialogues in films and TV dramas,the report discusses how to flexibly deal with difficulties encountered in perspectives of lip-sync,characterization,and lifestyle.Lip-sync means a perfect match of translated lines with utterances of the characters on screen.Characterization requires that the language shows the uniqueness of the characters.Lifestyle means that the language is close to the life of the audience.This report verifies the guiding significance of the principles of translation of dialogues in films and TV dramas.The text of New My Fair Princess(2011)is abundant with colloquial dialogue and numerous close-up scenes,highlighting the significance of lifestyle and lip-sync.Regarding lifestyle,the author encounters challenges in translating Chinese oral language,including humor,humble expressions,and culturally-loaded terms.In terms of lip-sync,the author identifies three major translation difficulties: similar words,similar lip shape and similar pauses.To enhance the translation and capture the original essence,the author adeptly employs various translation techniques,such as addition,omission,and free translation.Furthermore,the author systematically organizes the format of time code,mark for characters,and dialogue(including expressions,body language,and voiceover)within the Chinese dubbing script. |
