In early modern England, inns showed a rapid development in both number and scale. This trend of rapid development is closely related to the social transformation of Britain. The political, cultural and social background of the early modern period provided an opportunity for the rapid development of inns, while inns became one of the mediums of social transformation in early modern England.Tracing its roots back to the Middle Ages, the inn has been in existence since medieval society. After its initial development in the 16 th century,it reached its peak in the 18 th century. The development of inns showed distinct phases. In the 16 th and 17 th centuries, the number of inns continued to grow, both in terms of building scale and investment, and their economic characteristics became increasingly evident.18 th century, inns reached their peak in terms of both number and scale, and their development entered a golden period, not only that,it also showed hierarchical characteristics, boosted by the social environment. From an economic point of view,in the early modern period, inns gradually participated in all aspects of British economic life and promoted the operation and development of the British economy.First,it played an important role in the transportation and trading of goods.Specifically,in addition to meeting basic services such as travel for vendors and accommodation for tourists, inns also provide a convenient place for goods circulation and transactions.Secondly, with the development of the economy and the diversification of the needs of social residents, inns have also become places for activities of service groups such as doctors and barbers. Finally,to meet the needs of economic development, the inn also undertakes some financial and intermediary responsibilities, which lays the foundation for the development of financial specialization. Therefore, inns have played an important mediating role in both the development of the commodity transportation system and the development of service and financial professions. Thus,it seems that the economic and social functions of inns developed in modern times are closely related to the transformation of modern British society. As the ranks of the middle class grow, the desire of this group to participate in political and social activities becomes more urgent. Therefore, the inn provides a place for political groups and social elites to plan political affairs and decide social affairs. Not only that, the social activities held by the inn not only enriched the urban life of the people at that time, but also promoted the gathering and circulation of information, and provided the possibility for intra-regional and inter-regional communication. In fact,to a certain extent, this affected the development of modern British politics and economy. Thus,it seems that the economic and social functions of inns developed in modern times are closely related to the transformation of modern British society.Of course,in the19 th century, due to the leap-forward improvement in transportation efficiency brought about by the development of railways,as well as the specialization of sales places and public facilities, inns eventually retained only the basic function of accommodation. But it is undeniable that inns played a unique role in early modern British society.
