The expression of the group exists in different forms of art,be it literature, painting, sculpture or video works. From a macro perspective, artworks that represent a particular group of people at a particular time can constitute the concept of ’group portrait’.The group image reaffirms the importance of the existence of people as a group and the importance of the collective image, while also emphasising the role of interpersonal relationships and communication in the formation of the group image. The narrative theory of video creation is mainly derived from literature and images.A good film cannot be made without a good ’point’,i.e.a story, and the creator then uses audiovisual language and other techniques to arrange the source material and build the story into a rational whole. The aim of this paper is to study the narrative strategies and visual expressions of group documentaries.I have carefully compiled and read relevant papers and books on this topic, and then analysed and summarised them in the context of narrative, semiotics, visual rhetoric and other related theories, and applied them to the creation of my graduation work, the documentary "The Stories of Cancer Patients"This paper consists of four parts. The introductory part mainly explains the research background of the chosen topic, the significance of the research, the research methodology, the review of relevant literature and the review of the work to prove the feasibility of the chosen topic from a theoretical perspective. In the first chapter, the author starts from the development of documentary film, summarises the connotation of the concept of group documentary film, and focuses on the characteristics of the creation of group documentary film, which provides theoretical support for the construction of the narrative strategy in the subsequent chapters;in the second chapter, the author explores the narrative structure, narrative perspective, narrative rhythm, narrative space and narrative elements of group documentary film in the context of the graduation work "The Stories of Cancer Patients".The third chapter illustrates the development of group portrait documentaries through the analysis of the author’s graduation work "The Stories of Cancer Patients",and then explores innovative methods and modes of dissemination. From a practical perspective, this article hopes to provide valuable experiences and inspirations for creators and make a modest contribution to the study of group documentaries.
