| Naturalism is a fundamental ideological tendency in contemporary Western philosophy of mind, but naturalism is currently merging with a theory that is usually considered incompatible with dualism, thus showing a trend of weakening and even mystification. This trend was first initiated by Sellars and then widely discussed and debated by Chalmers,Mc Ginn, and others.Chalmers,on the other hand, for the first time examined the problem of consciousness from a naturalistic theoretical framework in conjunction with attribute dualism, thus establishing a novel theory of consciousness, naturalistic dualism. He believes that the key questions in the study of philosophy of mind should first focus on the nature of consciousness, such as where does consciousness come from? How does consciousness arise? Because of the complexity of consciousness,Chalmers proposes a naturalistic dualism in the process of studying the question of the nature of consciousness. In short,Chalmers re-examined the mind-body relationship and chose a neutral path to argue for the nature of consciousness, attempting to build a truly scientific theory of consciousness from a naturalistic theoretical framework. This five-part paper is devoted to the interpretation of the formulation and development of Chalmers’ naturalistic dualism, the division on the problem of consciousness, and the idea of followership.Specifically, the first part is the introductory part, which gives an account of the background and significance of this paper, the current status of domestic and foreign research, research methods, research contents and theoretical innovations. The second part elaborates the theoretical origin and weakening trend of naturalism and dualism, and analyzes the weakening trend of entity dualism and dualism in contemporary philosophy of mind, and the weakening trend of traditional naturalism and naturalism in contemporary philosophy of mind to find the theoretical source for the integration and development of naturalistic dualism in the field of contemporary philosophy of mind. The third part explains the core elements of Chalmers’ naturalistic dualism, such as the three basic principles of the explanatory bridge used by Chalmers in arguing for the relationship between consciousness and cognitive mechanisms, the explanation of the "hard problem" of consciousness through the "mindless man argument" thought experiment, and the proposal of the theory of natural attachment of consciousness. The fourth part describes the integration of naturalistic dualism, focusing on the tendency of naturalism to integrate with dualism, the results, and the typical controversies;the fifth part describes the dialectical thinking of Chalmers’ naturalistic dualism. We need to see both the problems and the value and contributions of the theory. The most prominent result of the current innovative thinking in the field of philosophy of mind is the investigation of the integration of naturalism and dualism. Therefore, the naturalistic dualism constructed by Chalmers not only brings great intellectual reference to the study of consciousness in the field of philosophy of mind, but also brings great value and contribution to the development of our understanding of the science of consciousness at present. We should think rationally and dialectically about Chalmers’ naturalistic dualism. |
