The Hedonic Writing In Shao Xunmei’s Novels

Shao Xunmei is a famous poet,novelist,essayist,translator,publisher and so on in the history of modern literature.He is often regarded as a representative figure of the camp of aestheticism-decadence in China,and he has made great achievements in literary and cultural career and literary creation.Shao Xunmei is a nobleman,and his excellent family conditions provide him with a good living environment,so that he has enough capital to engage in literary activities.But in view of the life style,literary concept and other factors,Shao Xunmei’s literary history evaluation is different,literary achievements do not get due attention.Shao Xunmei’s novels are not many,but the subject matter is diverse,involving gambling novels,allusion novels,love novels,old aristocratic novels and so on.They are a vivid portrayal of his own life,but also closely related to the background of the times.When Shao Xunmei’s novels come out,he is praised by his peers,but he does not insist on moving forward on the road of novel creation,and his edge and importance are soon covered up.The existing research on Shao Xunmei pays more attention to his poetry creation,publishing activities and translation career,but ignores his other identity.At present,Shao Xunmei’s novel research has not formed a system,only a few articles on the novel,most of them are only mentioned in part in the paper.In summary,the novel research focuses on three aspects: The first is to continue the research of "gambling novel" and "allusion novel";The second is to prove Shao Xunmei’s research on poetry and editorial activities by novels or explore the relationship between Shao Xunmei and Lu Xun;The third is to discuss the aestheticism style of Shao Xunmei’s novels.In general,the research on Shao Xunmei’s novels is limited,and it fails to grasp the core connotation,and there is a lack of deeper interpretation,let alone put Shao Xunmei’s novels in the perspective of literary history to observe and reasonably evaluate its literary history value.This paper holds that "hedonic writing" is the soul of Shao Xunmei’s novels,which runs through his creation from beginning to end,which not only comes from the luvorous habits he has developed in his native family since childhood,but also has something to do with the influence of western aestheticism he has received in his adult life.In Shao Xunmei’s writing,pleasure is a kind of survival attitude of self-exile and the wanton venting of human’s instinctive desire,which encapsulates Shao Xunmei’s questioning or subversion of moral norms,and contains his exploration of the value and meaning of life,reflecting his ultimate pursuit of individual freedom and value,which is the core concept to understand his life experience and literary ideal.Therefore,this paper takes "hedonic writing" as the entry point to interpret Shao Xunmei’s novels,and puts them in the corresponding historical context to explore the literary history value of his novels.It is discussed in the following four chapters:The first chapter analyzes the sensuous pleasure in Shao Xunmei’s novels.Shao Xunmei’s novels mostly depict the parts of human body,presenting the characteristics of vivid,among which the depiction of vision and hearing is the most prominent.Sensory writing focuses on two sections: one is the presentation of specific parts,which is mainly represented by the sexy and provocative mouth close-up and the passionate and flexible eye focus,giving people an intuitive visual feast;The other is the concrete writing of abstract emotions.The use of synesthesia techniques is remarkable,especially the connection between hearing and other parts,which strengthens people’s various feelings.The second chapter discusses the material pleasure in Shao Xunmei’s novels.Shao Xunmei has a rich life since childhood,and knows money and all kinds of materials very well.In the novel,he tries his best to express people’s ardent desire for money and their pursuit of superior and luxurious life,which reflects the social characteristics of the transition era and thus reveals the characters’ living conditions.The third chapter discusses the spiritual pleasure of Shao Xunmei’s novels.Spiritual intoxicating stimulation can be found everywhere in Shao Xunmei’s novels.There are intentional avoidance and breaking of the stable and boring reality,as well as deliberate satisfaction of the instinctive desires such as lust,material desire and appetite,as well as the vivid interpretation of the spiritual victory method,which vividly conveys the hedonistic living principles.The fourth chapter analyzes the nihilistic kernel of Shao Xunmei’s novels.Pleasure in Shao Xunmei’s novels is a kind of survival posture,which is led by nihilistic emotion.In Shao Xunmei,on the one hand,his nihilism is caused by the ideological tendency of doubting the existing moral norms,deliberately ignoring the pursuit of long-term ambition and taking the transitalism as the purpose of life.On the other hand,it is also attributed to the confusion of the transition era,which not only worries about the decline of the national family,but also resents the mutual abuse of scholars in the same period.Nihility is common in the history of modern literature,and the expression of nihility in Shao Xunmei’s novels is the product of the combination of the commonality of times and the uniqueness of individuals,which is an important dimension to explore the history of modern literature.This paper establishes the research object and research theme through literature research.In the process of detailed discussion,the author mainly uses close reading of text,comparative research and literary history mutual evidence to analyze and discuss the hedonic writing in Shao Xunmei’s novels in detail,and then uses Shao Xunmei’s poetry,poetic theory,prose and novel theory as auxiliary argumentative materials,so as to compare Shao Xunmei’s novels with those of other writers who belong to the aesthete and Shanghai camp.Therefore,the uniqueness of Shao Xunmei’s novels is highlighted and the evaluation is more objective.To sum up,this paper holds that "hedonic writing" is the key dimension to grasp Shao Xunmei’s novels.The study of Shao Xunmei’s novels from this point of view can make up for the shortcomings of existing Shao Xunmei’s research,help to understand Shao Xunmei and his novel creation more deeply,and also provide a new research path for Shao Xunmei’s related research,so as to further enrich and deepen the academic circle’s research on Shanghai literature and even Shanghai culture in the history of modern literature.
