Wu Rulun’s Tang Poetry Advocacy Comment-Erratum was collected and compiled by his son,Wu Xisheng, and is a very important commentary on Tang Poetry Advocacy. The book is based on the Tang Poetry Advocacy Annotations, which was annotated by Qian Chaozi and Wang Junchen, and interpreted by Lu Yidian and Wang Qingchen in the Qing Dynasty, with the original notes deleted and only the preface and the results of the proofreading retained;there is a preface by Wu Rulun in front, and the commentary is interspersed in the text, with a precise style and unique insights. The earliest and the only extant edition of Tang Poetry Advocacy Comment-Erratum is Mr.Tongcheng’s Commentary on Tang Poetry Advocacy of the 14 th year of the Republic of China, which was edited and published by Xing Zhixiang,a famous bibliophile and disciple of Wu,so it is also called Nangong Xing’s engraved book. The style of the book is mainly two types of commentaries and circled points, showing the overall pattern of "extensive circled points and precise commentaries".The main purpose of the book is to explain the meaning of poems and teach students, and the language is simple and clear without elaboration, while the content is knowledgeable and prudent and original. All in all,the commentaries and circles in Tang Poetry Encounter cover many aspects such as the background of creation, the general meaning of the poems, the poet’s emotions, and the structure of the chapters, etc. Both of them have their own focus, yet they are well-integrated,building a complete commentary system.Tang Poetry Advocacy Comment-Erratum shows two poetic concepts of Wu Rulun: the tendency to learn the poetic method of Yuan Haowen and Du Fu,and the application of the theory of "comparison and sentiment".According to Wu Rulun, the style of the poems selected for Tang Poetry Advocacy is "impassioned, bold and calm",which is consistent with his poetic philosophy of esteeming the poetry of Du Fu and Yuan Haowen and advocating the masculine and bold poetic style. In commenting on specific works,Tang Poetry Advocacy extensively adopts the theory of "comparison and sentiment" to explain the poems, highlighting the characteristics of the era of poetry in the middle and late Tang.As the world declined and the political situation became turbulent,Wu Rulun’s patriotic anxiety and quiet retreat intertwined, leading him to identify with the ideology and emotions contained in the Tang Poems and to present them in Tang Poetry Advocacy Comment-Erratum.The identity of the selectors, the order of the volumes, and the style of the selected poems in Tang Poetry Advocacy have been the subject of many controversies and inconclusive opinions.By synthesizing the views of previous authors, reorganizing the poets’ volumes, and analyzing Yuan Haohuo’s poetic thought,Tang Poetry Advocacy Comment-Erratum has strongly countered the doubts and denials of previous authors, and has made an important contribution to the study of Yuan Haohuo and Tang Poetry Advocacy.
