The use of relative words in Chinese compound sentences is an important grammatical tool for communicative expressions, and the correct use of relational words is a major challenge for overseas Chinese students. In this paper,we collect real-life compositions from overseas Chinese intermediate students at a Chinese school in Florence,Italy.Using the statistical method to count the usage rate, error rate and the percentage of error types of various relational words.Using the bias analysis method, their typical biases are depicted and analysed, and combined with the questionnaire, the causes of the biases are explored and teaching suggestions are made. The study found that the following words were used in the following order:parallelism, conditionality, causality, choice, progression, transitivity, concession, coherence, assumption and purpose. In descending order of usage: cause-effect,transitive,coherent,parallel,progressive,concessional,hypothetical,conditional,selective,purposive.The types of bias are,in descending order of importance, wrong addition, omission, misuse and misordering. The reasons for the errors are not only the negative transfer of Italian, but also the complexity of the Chinese relational words, the students’ inappropriate learning strategies, the teachers’ inadequate explanations, and the lack of relevance in the selection of teaching materials and exercises. Finally, suggestions are made to enrich the form of exercises, adopt diverse teaching forms and means, accurately grasp the context in which relational words are used, overcome intimidation and develop a sense of Chinese language.
