Western figure painting was influenced by the humanism trend of thought in the Renaissance, which made it possible for the painting content to change from gods to real characters. There were numerous oil paintings of western civilian images in the17 th and 19 th centuries.By the 1960 s,the "civilian historical view" that emerged in European and American countries and was widely popular worldwide had a huge impact on the entire society and occupied a dominant position. This is a disruptive historical shift that focuses on the field of ordinary people’s lives, and during this period, the characteristics of art creators also lie in their integration with ordinary people’s lives, reflecting the thoughts, emotions, and aesthetic concepts of the common people in society. Some forward-looking art creators from the 17 th to 19 th centuries have already paid attention to the common people group,so this article takes the creation of Western common people image oil paintings from the 17 th to 19 th centuries as the starting point and is divided into five parts. The first part is an introduction to the entire article, which explains the research origin and significance, current research status at home and abroad, research ideas, and research methods of the paper. The second part first explains the term "commoner",and then elaborates on the different representations of commoner images in Western oil painting from the 17 th to 19 th centuries, such as how painters portray the transformation and development of commoner images in their works. The third part elaborates on the process of civilian image oil painting creation, mainly explaining how to determine the theme of civilian creation,as well as learning and choosing the formal language of oil painting. The fourth part elaborates on the realization through one’s own oil painting creation practice that focusing on life is the source of creation, and creation requires humanistic care. The fifth part is the reflection obtained by the author through the study of western civilian oil painter in the 17 th and 19 th centuries and his own creative practice. The images and ideas expressed in painting are fresh and worthy of our young generation of painters to inherit and carry forward.
