A C-E Translation Report On Linzi:the Ancient Capital Of The State Of Qi (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Translation Variation Theory

Linzi boasts a long history with splendid culture.As the capital of the Qi state for more than 800 years,it has created ancient Chinese excellent regional culture--Qi culture.Qi culture played an especially significant role in the history of Chinese culture with its unique cultural foundation,inclusive characteristics,and distinctive historical contribution.Consequently,the author selected Linzi: the Ancient Capital of the State of Qi as the corpus of this translation practice report to manifest the great charm of the ancient capital from multiple points of view.Linzi: the Ancient Capital of the State of Qi,a book about regional culture,is simple and plain in language style and rich in historical and cultural matters,involving some culture-loaded words,historical allusions,classical Chinese prose quoted and so on.Based on the above characteristics,the author translated the source text under the guidance of Professor Huang Zhonglian’s Translation Variation Theory.The theory encompasses amplification,omission,edition,narration,condensation,combination and adaptation.In this translation practice,the translator attempts to solve the translation problems with amplification,omission,edition,narration and adaptation.By analyzing the stylistic features of the source text,the author verifies the feasibility and the directing function of the Translation Variation Theory in regional culture translation.Based on the translation practice and the case analysis,the conclusions are reached as follows: transmission and conversion of historical and cultural information can be obtained by adopting various translation means in the cultural translation practice.The amplification was employed to replenish some cultural elements and explain historical allusions with the aim of offering the target readers more related background knowledge.The translator deleted redundant and useless information from the target readers’ perspective to retain and highlight the most valuable information.Edition and narration were used to reorganize and arrange the source text and change its form for the sake of making the translated text conform to the expression norms of the target language.Based on the content of the text,adaptation was adopted to rewrite in another genre to convey the original information in a direct way.It is hoped that the Translation Variation Theory and translation qualities of regional culture can be refined based on practice and study.Moreover,it is also the author’s hope that the target readers acquire a deeper understanding of the splendid and gorgeous Chinese culture,and the Qi culture may take on the world in a more positive and confident gesture.
