In the 1950s,Dong Shouping,Wang Xuetao,Chen Banding and Xu Beihong made mixed comments on Ren Bonian’s paintings, but there are many one-sided interpretations of these comments in the existing research, which often fall into the situation of a glimpse. Therefore, this paper tries to take the evaluation of these four painters as the main line, combined with the specific characteristics and development of Ren Bonian’s painting,so as to obtain a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding.Through a comparative study of Wang Xuetao and Xu Beihong’s different views on Ren Bonian’s painting,we can find out their different attitudes on Ren Bonian’s early meticulous painting style and later literati painting style.By summarizing the concept of "sweet and ripe" in painting theory,it can be found that Dong Shouping’s evaluation has two meanings of pen and ink cultivation and artistic innovation.By discussing Chen Banding’s evaluation on the merits and demerits of Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo’s calligraphy and painting,we can find out their position in the development process of Shanghai School’s calligraphy and painting. At the same time, the four painters’ evaluation of Ren Bonian was influenced to a certain extent by the trend of "Chinese painting improvement" at that time, and was closely related to the differences between the collections of calligraphy and painting in Beijing and Shanghai.
