As a successor to the Southern School of painting,Wang Shimin inherited the mantle of his teacher Dong Qichang,and took up the mantle of Huang Gongwang,Ni Zan,Wang Meng and Wu Zhen,the “Four Masters of Yuan”,followed Dong Yuan and Juran in the Fifth Dynasty,opened the “Lou Dong School” and influenced The “Yushan School”.It was not until Wang Shimin reached’a change’ in Chinese literati landscape painting.Through Wang Shimin’s integration,literati landscape painting took on a more systematic appearance,although it showed a tendency to become more programmatic.As a representative work of the later years of Wang Shimin’s painting career,The Book of Du Fu’s Poetic Intentions is a major masterpiece in which Wang Shimin integrated the methods of the southern schools and drew on the strengths of all of them.In The Album of Du Fu’s Poetic Ideas,Wang Shimin invokes the twelve poems of Du into his paintings,carefully conceived and uniquely crafted,and his paintings contain a wealth of aesthetic interest from “poetry” to “painting”.In terms of artistic expression,Wang Shimin paints the poetic scene with the poetic scene,carefully figuring out the spatial relationship between sky and earth,mountain and water,and people and scenery in Du’s poems,achieving a realm of “liveable and travelable”in the spatial expression of the painting;at the same time,he carefully figures out the colour expression between the poet’s emotions and the scenery of the painting,and the colour expression between the four seasons,morning and evening,cloudy and sunny,and light and dark shades.In the expression of colour and ink,Wang Shimin has portrayed the colour relationship of “colour expresses poetic feelings” and “colour changes from time to time” as well as the relationship between light and dark;in the expression of mood,Wang Shimin explores the intertext of poetry and painting with the painter’s “out-of-place thinking” In terms of expression of mood,Wang Shimin explores the way of interplay between poetry and painting,choosing poetry as the realm,and using painting and ink to interpret the mood of poetry,thus achieving a painting mood of “interpreting poetry with painting”.In terms of aesthetic style,Wang Shimin combines the techniques of Dong,Ju and the“Four Artists of Yuan” in his brushwork on subjects such as mountains and rocks,trees,clouds and water,and architecture,and disrupts and reorganizes their brushwork and ink use,thus forming his own style of simplicity and composure;he also uses a variety of pictorial styles,such as a river and two banks,dragon veins and stretches,with many variations,reflecting a neutral and The overall style of Wang Shimin is free from the influence of Dong Qichang in his early years,with his brushwork seeking to be woolly,his colours dull,and his pointing to be complex,revealing the strength and mellowness of his later painting style.In short,Wang Shimin’s “Album of Du Fu’s Poetic Ideas” incorporates the painting techniques of all the great masters of the Southern School of painting,and in terms of brushwork,ink and drawing style,he has formed his own school of thought,forming an aesthetic style that is a combination of ancient simplicity,calmness,and strength.Wang Shimin’s “Album of Du Fu’s Poetic Ideas” is a rare creation with a clear purpose,systematic organization,and rich connotation in the history of the creation of “Du Fu’s Poetic Ideas”,and its contribution to enriching the history of the reception of “Du Poetry” is unparalleled!...
