E-C Translation Study On Energy Policy Text From The Perspective Of Cohesion

This translation project is excerpted from Aspects of the Energy Union: Application and Effects of European Energy Policies in SE Europe and Eastern Mediterranean edited by Michalis Mathioulakis.The translation project is an energy policy text,which mainly introduces European energy policies,laws and their influences.The source text is a functional and informative text with strong objectivity,coherence and logic,using formal language and cohesion methods.This translation research report aims to explore the translation strategies and methods applicable to the translation of energy policy texts in line with the cohesive features of energy policy texts.From the perspective of the Cohesion Theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,the English text is analyzed from four grammatical cohesive devices—reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction.According to the differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices,and the examples of English-Chinese translation,this paper analyzes the translation strategies and methods of English texts using these four grammatical cohesive devices.After analysis,it is concluded that when translating English energy policy texts into Chinese,the translator should analyze the type of grammatical cohesion methods used in the original text,and selectively use explicit or implicit translation strategy considering the characteristics of the Chinese language.Translation methods such as amplification,omission,conversion and repetition can be used to make the translation accurately not only convey the logic and meaning of the original text,but also conform to the Chinese expression habits.This translation research report will help to better use the cohesion theory to guide the English-Chinese translation practice of energy policy texts in the future.
