This paper is a translation practice report. The original text of the translation is selected from Chapter One of the first part of the book Essays for the Study of the International Air and Space Law.It introduces many current hot legal issues of international air law, including the international air crime and penal law, aviation safety and security.Based on the practice of English-Chinese translation of more than 17,000 words, the author explores the difficulties and methods of E-C translation of the book.In the translating process, she not only encounters technical terms covering English for Science and Technology(EST)in aviation, but also a lot of long complex sentences. How to deal with long complex sentences has become the biggest difficulty for the author.Under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory, this report discusses the translation of long complex sentences from the perspective of grammatical cohesion of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. As English focuses on hypotaxis while Chinese emphasizes parataxis,it is necessary to deal with the incongruity of cohesive devices in English-Chinese translation. The findings of the study show that, for grammatical cohesive translation of difficult sentences, translation methods such as preservation, addition, omission, conversion and so on can be used.Specifically, the methods of reference are preservation and omission;the method of substitution is repetition;the methods of substitution are repetition and equivalent translation;and the methods of conjunction are additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, causal conjunction and temporal conjunction. The above translation methods for EST in aviation can better solve the difficulties of long complex sentences and provide some references for further research and translation practice of aviation EST discourse.
