| Since the 13 th century,many Western missionaries came to Mongolia for various purposes and left behind many travelogues,letters,and other documents describing the situation,natural environment,and ethnic customs of Mongolia at that time.These documents were the main way for the western countries to know Mongolia at that time,so the 13 th century Mongolian travelogues are very valuable to study.This dissertation will take literary theory as the basic theory,comparative literature theory as the support,“The Journey of John of Plano Carpini”and“William of Rubruck’s Journey to the East”as the main research texts,and other western Mongolian travelogues as the reference texts to study and explore the content and literary characteristics of western Mongolian travelogues in the 13 th century.This dissertation will consist of five main parts,including introduction,three chapters of the main text,conclusion,references,and appendix.In the introduction,we will mainly explain the basis of the topic,list the overview of the research,explain the purpose and value of the study,and explain the research method.The first chapter introduces the text,explores the author of the travelogues and the background of their creation,and briefly explains the editions and translations of the travelogues.The second chapter is an analysis of the content of the travelogues,which is divided into three parts:folklore accounts,historical accounts,and other accounts.The contents include food,clothing,housing,marriage,family,funeral,historical events,historical figures,geography,religion,military,etc.In the third section,the characteristics and values of travelogues are analyzed in three sections:the textual characteristics of travelogues,the literary characteristics of travelogues,and the values of travelogues.The characteristics are analyzed in terms of textual structure;the literary attribution,writing style,narrative mode,and language style are analyzed from a literary point of view;and the value of the chronicles is identified from a literary,historical,and cultural point of view.In the conclusion section there is a brief summary of the results of the research for the thesis and the shortcomings of the thesis.The references list the Chinese-English and Mongolian works,dissertations,and journal articles that were read during the writing of the dissertation.In the appendix there is a road map of the two travelogues and a list of the chapters of the travelogues. |
