This paper takes A Study on the Farming Culture of Ethnic Groups in Southern Yunnan as a source text for the translation practice. This book is a theoretical monograph on the study of ethnic groups cultures, mainly expounding the diversity and changing track of farming cultures of various ethnic groups in southern Yunnan from the founding of People’s Republic of China to the present,it is suitable for researchers of ethnic culture. The selected part of the translator mainly tells the life style, farming methods and social structure of the society with different land patterns. There are a large number of ethnic culture-loaded words in the text, such as“甑子”,“包产到户”,“召曼”and so on.When translated, these words have high demands for accuracy, fidelity, and coherence. It is difficult to find the corresponding expression in English for the translator. As a result, this translated practice report focuses on the translation of these culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics. The theory adopted by the translator is Eco-translation theory.Hu Gengshen believes that there are many subjects involved in translation, and there are multi-dimensional transformations, but the three-dimensional transformations of language, culture and communication are the main ones.In view of the unbalanced transmission of English and Chinese cultures in each other’s contexts, the translator adopts some translation methods, such as literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration with annotation, guided by Eco-translation theory and the translation strategy of foreignization-oriented and domestication-assisted.By analyzing the linguistic features of the original text, the translator divides the culture-loaded words into five categories. The translation should conform to both the original text and the expression habits of the target readers,so that the translation can be easily understood by target language readers for better dissemination of policies and culture related to Chinese agriculture and ethnic group culture to foreign readers, thereby furthering the international spread of Chinese culture in cross-cultural coexistence. |
