Study On Translation Strategies Of Culture-Loaded Words In Life And Death Are Wearing Me Out From The Perspective Of Foreignization Or Domestication

China’s excellent traditional culture is an important part of world culture.Excellent literary works are the carrier of culture and the embodiment of culture.The translation of China’s literary works is key to disseminate China’s brilliant culture and enhance China’s soft power.Due to the long history and colorful development of Chinese culture,traditional Chinese literary works also have a strong national and regional character.These characteristics are mainly reflected in the cultural loaded words in literary works.How to accurately and appropriately translate these cultural loaded words has always been a topic of common concern in the academic community.Translation strategy is the guiding principle of translation work.The translation strategies of culture-loaded words mainly include foreignization translation and domestication translation.From the perspective of foreignization translation strategies and domestication translation strategies,the present study summarizes and analyzes the translation of culture-loaded words in Mo Yan’s Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out,and sorts out the specific translation methods used.It is found through research that the translation strategy of culture-loaded words in Mo Yan’s Life and Death are Wearing Me Out is mainly based on domestication translation.At the same time,it also combines foreignization translation strategy.The purpose of translators adopting such translation strategies is to ensure reading smoothness to the greatest extent,and also to reduce dyslexia and spread Chinese traditional culture effectively.However,for the most representative language expressions and Chinese cultural images,translators do adopt the foreignization translation strategy.The purpose of this is to preserve the characteristics of Chinese culture and language expression to the greatest extent.The concept of culture-loaded words was first introduced into Chinese translation circles by the translation scholar Guozhang Xu(1998).This study selects the corresponding words in Life and Death are Wearing Me Out according to the definition of culture-loaded words by scholar Qiyi Liao.According to Nida’s(1995)classification of culture,the culture-loaded words in Life and Death are Wearing Me Out are divided into ecological culture-loaded words,material culture-loaded words,social cultureloaded words,religious culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-loaded words.Through manual screening and analysis,the following conclusions are drawn:domestication is mainly adopted for the culture-loaded words in Life and Death are Wearing Me Out,accounting for about 67%;Foreignization translation strategy accounts for about 33%.It is found that in the Life and Death are Wearing Me Out,the main methods of domestication translation include free translation,substitution and simplification,whereas the main methods of foreignization translation include literal translation,transliteration,literal translation plus annotation,transliteration plus annotation.This study also analyzed the translation cases,and provided a reasonable and effective translation method.This study uses self-built corpus to make statistics on culture-loaded words in Mo Yan’s Life and Death are Wearing Me Out,and analyzes their corresponding translation methods and translation strategies.Life and Death are Wearing Me Out is a Chinese literary work with great influence in and out of China and the research significance of its translation is rich.Learning from the successful precedent of this work in the world can help to spread Chinese overseas.The study of the translation of this novel is of great significance to the Chinese translation field.
